UDWR Bear Lake Fishing Report:

There is about 30-36” of snow on the ground on the west side of Bear Lake and 18” or more at Cisco Beach. The State Park has plowed along Cisco Beach and access good. The lake completely frozen over and ice thickness ranges from 2-5” depending on location. The ice along Cisco Beach is about 2½” thick and you are able to stand on the ice and dip net Cisco. The Cisco run has peaked and will slow down over the next few days. This morning some anglers were able to dip net Cisco if they were jigging a lure in the hole to attract them in, but the size of the schools of fish coming through are beginning to decline. It is important to make sure you only dip net your fish and not for other anglers.

Ice anglers are able to access the lake just about anywhere at this time. Best luck is now coming off the rockpile, state park marina and off the weedbeds south of Gus Rich Point and off the “pump house”.

Those anglers who have been ice fishing are doing very good for Cisco in depths of about 20’-25’ of water usuing spoons such as Kastmasters and Swedish Pimples. You can also try running a 6-8” dropper line below the spoons with an ice fly for the Whitefish. Small jigs tipped with a salmon egg, pieced of nightcrawler, or waxworm also work well for whitefish at this time. You may keep foul-hooked (snagged) Cisco, but any other foul-hooked species must be immediately released.

Try fishing in 35’-70’ of water for Cutthroat Trout and Lake Trout. Use tube jigs or vertical jigging lures tipped with Cisco. Please remember, all Cutthroat Trout that are caught and don’t have a healed fin clip must be released. Large Lake Trout are not very good eating and take a long time to reach large sizes, and while they are legal to keep, many anglers are encouraging other anglers to release them.
