Well i can finally say I have caught a walleye through the ice now. I landed two, missed one, and one big walter is swimming around with my rippin rap in its mouth. I neglected to charge my fish finder the night before, or maybe I could have scored more eyes.

I ran Big Rapalas on my downrigger just a few feet off the bottom for hours there last November trying to do what you did.
My journal says I caught 26 bows, not a single eye or brown.
