I just joined up so this is my first post. Fished Deer Creek Saturday from about 7:30 in the morning until about 2:00 in the afternoon afternoon and barely had time to eat a banana. It was one after another anchored on the north end by the old river channel. The Salmon Peach power bait on 18-24 inch leader and a couple split shot worked very well. Initially it was pretty slow until we moved about 100 yards then we knocked the #%# out of them.

Welcome to the site!

Sound like you had a lot better success than I did. I was on the south end trolling and I marked a ton but hardly any lovin. Glad you had a great time out there.

Were you fishing for the deeper fish that you could see on the finder of up shallow in the first ten or fifteen feet of the water column?

A lot of the trout will stay up next to the surface while the temps stay comfortable for them. These fish almost never show up on the finder as they will move out to the side of the boat as you troll by. Because of that we will troll in a S pattern or make big sweeping curves to get the lures out from behind the boats path and in front of their noses. Our success went way up after we stopped pointing the bow in one direction and going that way till we were about to hit the shore.

We also did well Saturday. We fished from 7:30 to 12:30 and ended the day with 35.

We were trolling flies and jakes on the planer boards mostly. Had a very few hit rapalas.

It sure was a beautful day to be up there. On the way out, we passed someone coming in with waverunners. It was a bit cold for that!

We got on the lake in the afternoon. The bite was slow, but we still landed a couple trout. A nice fat brown around 18 inches and a smaller rainbow.

I married an occasional on down low, but most of the fish I marked was in the 5-10 range. From reading the posts it looks like I need to invest in some planner boards and I should have switched to different lures.

I saw the guy on a wave runner too and thought the same. But I really was puzzled by the two youth who were in kayaks and shirtless. Way to cold for me to be doing that.

I was there on Friday and did really well. the bite was on all day at the North end. I started with two poles but stopped that practice as I kept getting doubles and had to leave one fish to bring in the other. I don't like to stress/weaken them any more than I have to so I switched to one pole. I did use a down rigger for quite a while but had no success with that at 20', 25', 30' and towing a Lucky Craft pointer 78 trout, slathered with procure and maggots attached.
I trolled along the West shore mostly on the North end and did really well. Something that has worked well for me has been a dodger and Hoochie squid about 11" behind the dodger so it snaps back and forth with the action of the dodger. I suppose I'm at a depth of 10' or less. The colors that have been best for me have been #1 orange, #2 pink, #3 chartreuse. use a dodger with the same color of your squid or just plain silver works well too. I slather the inside of the Hoochie with Procure lure scent and on the 2 hooks I add a pink maggot. Troll about 1.3-1.5 mph. and it doesn't hurt to do S turns now and then. I had a blast, first trip out this year.

How far behind the boat do you run your lures so as to get them off to the side on your S turns?
We tangle quite often when we S turn. I tend to run about 30 yards behind the boat though.

Yeah somewhere between 30-50 yards back. Try being a little more gradual when making your turns to keep the lures running into each other.

I have also used the Luhr Jensen planers to get lures out to the sides so thst you don't have to turn so much.

These will get light lures out away from the boat and aren't as bad to drag through the water like the big Off Shore planer boards.

Thanks.
We will try the Luhr Jensen planers out also.
We have not tried planers as I hate dragging a lot of weight and then not feeling the fish.

You're not supposed to marry your occasional, that's called polygamy!

Hi PACMEN.

I use planers but I don't reel them in with the fish.

I tie the planar board to a second pole with 40lb line and use a release on the planar board like a downrigger.

I wouldn't use them either if it meant I had to reel in the planer board with the fish.

I'll take a picture and post it.

I would be interested in seeing a picture of your set up. I have been trolling behind my 12 ft aluminum boat would your set up work with that small of a boat?

Yes. I will take a picture and post it later today.

Planar Board Set Up.

Here's the picture. I use:

1. Reel end of a fishing rod (old or broken tip rods still have their uses!)

2. One cheep baitcaster type reel (easier to use than spinning reel)

3. Planer Board. In this case a Cabela's brand. I use others also. The pictured board is the smallest size. If I were starting out, I'd buy the next size up.

4. 30-40lb test line tied to a small downrigger ball release.

5. Downrigger clip release.

6. Second downrigger clip release on a shower curtain clip.

Just last week I ran experiments with the secondary clip. It worked very well. I clip the fishing line in the release and clip the shower curtain on the planer board line.

The shower curtain clip will travel down the line to the planer board with minimal impact on the board. A second clip started to cause issues. I haven't tried three.

But at a minimum, it means I only bring the planer board in every 2-3 fish.

Thanks for those instructions, I want to try it.

I'm Confused on what the second clip with the shower curtain hanger is for. Also can you elaborate on step #4?

over the years I have posted how to use planer boards
you can search some of my post may be hard to find

Here is a YouTube video that gives you the idea. Masterdaad is using a smaller version of this set up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlb9-5fqtC8

I use the second clip after catching a fish with the primary clip.

I leave the planer board out, clip the fishing line into the downrigger release, then clip the shower curtain hangar onto the planer board line.

The second clip will travel down the planer board line out to the planer board. when it gets close to the board, I close the bail on the fishing pole and I'm set to go again.

One of the posted videos shows this with a slightly different set of hardware.
