After I got off work on Saturday Dave and I headed out to see if we could catch a fish. The weather had been great but there were rumors the wind might blow out of the South. We took a chance because it was our only shot before the next wet spell.
We launched at Lincoln about 3:30 PM. There were about 15 trailers in the parking lot and the channel was about 2 feet except for right by the buoy where it was only 1.8. Water temps varied from 60 to 58.
We headed out by the island hoping to catch a white bass for bait, OK we hoped to fool a walleye by saying we wanted white bass. Somebody was fooled, but not the walleye.
We cast with soft plastics with one rod and dragged last years WB meat on the other rods. In the first our and a half, Dave missed one hit on a jig and then caught a 2 foot kitty on his bait rod. I was still stinking.
The southerly wind hit a bit after 5. Thinking it was short lived, we anchored on the lee side the island. We got no more hits on the jigs, but I got a decent channel on a bait lying on the bottom. It found the anchor rope and I had to use a little more persuasion than usual. Didn't break it off, but the hook pulled out when Dave was just about to net it. I was going to release it anyway[]
The wind died down about 7 and we motored over to the point and started over again. After 15 minutes a white bass hit my jig and volunteered to be fresh bait and I quit stinking at the same time. I missed one other hit on the jigs and then we started dragging the baits toward the channel to call it a day. It was an uphill battle as the wind returned. it was worthwhile though. The volunteer WB caught me a 25 inch kitty and we had 3 others on before we finally fired up the big motor and went in about 10 PM.
So, we ended up boating 2 nice channels and got a little fresh bait. We had about 10 hits altogether on the bait and 4 or 5 on jigs. Like BLK had told me, the kitties seemed widely scattered and somewhat tentative. Still a good first outing all in all.
More fun to come as the water warms!
