What a Sad story KSL reported on Yuba. My thoughts and prayers go out for them and their family and friends.

I know I am going to do a few things differently when I go out. I am going to store my life jacket on my body instead of in my cubbyhole. I will wear phone around my neck with its waterproof case and mini life jacket. I spend so much time and money on the fun part I forget about investing in future trips.

Please let's all be safe.

Lots of questions, Primarily what caused the boat to capsize? Is there even cell service out there? What about VHF radio?

This is something I worry about with family going off fishing out at the gorge where there isn't cell service.

These are especially dangerous times due to water temperature. Your time of useful consciousness in 40° water is maybe 20 minutes, no longer than 30. And you'd have NO control of your extremities for the last half of that.

From the reports there was 20-25mph winds sunday night and they were in a little aluminum boat. It probabaly just capsized due to wind.

My last several fishing trips have been Flaming Gorge without cell phone service where I was fishing.

But, I have one of these:

... and a reliable friend to receive an email who also has my SPOT account name and password. With that, he can know if I'm delayed, having minor difficulties or worse and he will have my exact location.

self help is sometimes your only choice this time of year . it's so tempting to go out and the water is deadly cold right now . and to make things even worse there are few others on the water to help. and the park service usually don't man the lake with a full staff and rarely have their boats in the water . be careful and take every precaution . god bless

According to this article they were taking on water before it capsized and they had life jackets on the boat but weren't using it. Seriously I feel bad for the family but how do you not put on a life jacket when the conditions are bad and your boat already taken on water. Bad move by the fishermen. Don't be stupid guys! Put your egos aside and put on a life jacket.

"The Juab County Sheriff's Office said the men had life jackets available to them but weren't wearing them at the time the boat capsized. Lorenzo swam to the shore while Skinner remained with the boat."

Sad story indeed, I use to fish Yuba a lot back in the walleye hay days and did a fair bit of fishing after dark, she can be a very wicked lady when the wind starts howling.

Unfortunatley I predict a similar even on Willard. I got my first boat at 10 years old (wooden skiff with a 10hp Evinrude) and in the last 30 years have learned a thing or two about boats and safety through mistakes of my own. I am amazed at the (lack of) size and (lack of) power on some of the boats people are comfortable launching in rough conditions here in Utah. I've seen boats similar to my first out when my friends 24' bay boat was taking waves over the bow.

I get it, it is hard to turn around at the launch. I hate it when it happens but it just isn't worth it. Especially when the water is still this cold.
