A buddy and I joined what appeared to be half of the Provo population last night at the mouth of the Provo river. It was a beautiful evening, and it also it seemed like everyone was catching fish. Still some post-spawn large female walleyes moving back down into the lake. And with the warm weather, there were also quite a few pre-spawn white bass moving in.
I admit to being a late-comer to the walleye bite here. My friend was out (with his group of scouts) a few days ago and saw people catching walleye, and so I decided to give it a try. Are there always as many people lining the mouth of the river as there are now? I'm just wondering if this is normal of if angling pressure has increased this season. If I'm one of the people now contributing to new crowds--my apologies about that. I don't remember so many people in the river during the white bass season last year, but I don't think I started till about May 12.
As far as strategies, I've found that I like tipping a spinner with a gulp minnow. I haven't tried this idea for smallmouths, but I have a hunch that it might work for them as well. It's interesting that we sometimes caught walleye and white bass while standing in the same spot. I've never encountered both species together in that way before.
My guess is that the walleye activity must be drawing to a close, but that in the next white bass fishing should actually get better? The only downside is that at this rate, I'm not going to fill my turkey tag this year...
