Hey guys, I'm headed back to Utah to fish this summer. I will be fishing flaming George which I've never fished before. We are gonna be renting a pontoon to fish out of and I might bring my 14' aluminum as well. My question is what can I expect that time of year (around July 20th), can anyone share any fishing tips, and maybe any locations anyone would be willing to share. I'm not looking for any specifics maybe just a few pointers. Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to coming back and fishing Utah again.

Let me bump you back to the top and see if we can get you a response. I am a new return to Utah, so my data would be old.
I have never fished the Gorge that time of year. I always did it earlier or later. Lakers will be really deep, Burbot will be night only and also deep. Kokes could be good, but again, DR and deep.
I hope we can get you some results.
Well it's highly doubtful you will have any D.R. on a rental boat so the Macs fishing will have to be by jigging if you have a means to hold the boat over fish in 70-120 fow. Might be tuff. But Koke fishing should be doable with inline trolling sinkers to get your presentation down to them, generally suspended in deep water 40 - 70 ft down. Rainbows will be cruising the shoreline and you can always cast to Rocky points and ledges for Smallies. Hope this helps...

Thanks for the info guys. It sounds like fishing might be pretty tough. Unfortunately with schedules being what they are that's the only available time to go. I would rather be there in the spring but you gotta take it when you can get it right 😜. The good thing is I'll be in Klamath CA over the week of the 4th so I'll get to do some fishing up there. My cousin has a nice river setup and he knows the area real well. Anyways, I'll keep the tips in mind and start gearing up. Thank you both again. I appreciate the info.

Actually the fishing should be pretty good. What are you really wanting to target while you are there?

You do know that July 24th is a Utah state holiday right?
it will be more crowded than usual, but its a big lake, so it never gets real bad, If you are looking for Kokanee the Wyoming part of the lake has the most and usually bigger Kokes, by then you will need a way to get down to around 35 to 55 feet, with the high runoff we are getting this year, they may not be as deep as usual, the laker pups will be anywhere from 65 to 100 + feet deep, the large lakers are almost always near or on the bottom , a couple things about the gorge is the almost daily afternoon winds, and in July the thunderstorms come up, if you are on the Utah side down in the canyon you cant see them building until they are almost on top of you, the good thing about being in the canyon is you can easily find a sheltered cove, they get over fast also, so its usually better to wait and not think you have to get back and off the water, you can always cast along the walls of the canyon for the smallmouth bass while waiting, flaming gorge also has lots of large crayfish, if you have never tried them its a great place to, the canyon part is very pretty, the also do tours at the dam all day, and you can rent rafts and float the river below the dam, you will love it up there, I go every chance I get, and still find something new everytime..

Thanks Tjet, I forgot all about the 24th of July being a holiday. If it were up to me I'd just wait till fall to go but you know how wives are when they start their planning. Thank you for all the info. At least I know now what to expect and fish accordingly!

Nothing in particular lunker, I'm just going along and would like to catch something. My guess is we will end up just relaxing and wetting a line more than anything. Are there any catfish in the lake? I wouldn't mind sittin around with a rod during the evening hours. I would be happy with smallies or kokes but I'm guess my wife and brother in law are gonna want to chase the big lakers. So really I'm interested in catching anything that has gills!

If you have a trolling or casting rod with a good sized level wind reel it would be easy to switch it over to some lead core line and use that to get down to the depth that the kokes are hanging out at.
We use one every trip for another line out besides the down riggers and it usually picks up a few.

I've never used lead line but I've used dipsey divers up at porcupine to catch Kokes. I could string the old Abu Garcia up with some lead line for this trip. Thanks for the reminder!

that time of year I don't think you can get down deep enough with lead line
Kokanee fishing is good in July. The best Kokanee fishing is on the WY. side.
Flaming Gorge is 91 miles long what Marina are you getting your boat?
To fish across state lines at Flaming Gorge, you must have a valid fishing license from one state and a reciprocal fishing permit from the other state.
the stamp cost $10.
you can ask the Marina if you can rent downriggers
start looking at a lot of you tube on how to fish Flaming Gorge
http://www.utahfishfinder.com/fishing.shtml
do a search of this site
with out downriggers you can catch Rainbow Trout, and Smallmouth Bass
you can anchor the boat and use power bait for Rainbow Trout, are cast with jigs.
their are some people on here that may tell you where to fish for Rainbows. and bass. the best bass fishing is on the Utah side but, they are not that big
I don't fish for them that time of year.
do a google search of flaming gorge guide service and see what they have to say.
