Loaded up my boat and headed to Mantua yesterday morning. I've got a new three weight flyrod, purchased specifically for panfish. Fishing by eight. In the first hour, I stuck four or five good bluegills, a fair bass (14 inches) and most surprisingly, a couple of perch. Perch on a flyrod was a first for me. The morning bite pretty much shut down around nine. Spent another hour and a half looking for fish with only a small bluegill to show for my efforts. Guess it pays to get their early. Home by 11:30 and after lunch with my wife drove over to Willard Bay's South Marina and was trolling out by the light pole by one thirty. Caught my first wiper in the first five minutes then spent the next hour and a half looking for fishable in the same area. No luck. Trolled the dike back to the south marina. Found one good group of fish and managed another four wipers. Loaded up and headed home by five. Not a great day of fishing, but not bad and did manage a Slam (4 species, same day). Totals for the day were 5 wipers, 6 bluegills, 1 bass and a couple of perch. Good thing the government doesn't know how much fun you can have catching bluegills on a three weight. They'd put a sin tax on it.

Sounds like a lot of fun Larry, did you flyfish the wiper too? I have a bunch of little bitty crappie that like to take flys just at sundown, and that sure is fun on the 3 WT even though they are small.. keep hoping one trip a nice fish will show up, but I'm afraid it's a nursery school where I'm fishing... Water's clear where I'm fishing and I don't think these fish dare come anywhere near the surface during daylight since there are too many terns around...But those magic few minutes around sundown and dark are really fun... Thanks for your story, makes me want to try it even more over there on Mantua... Later J

Caught the wipers trolling. If I can find my alarm, I might set it for 5 am and go back to Mantua in the morning.
