2 oldest sons and I did our annual camping trip to Hyrum this last weekend. Fished Hyrum Friday starting about 8 a.m. Trolled for the first hour or so, but everything was deeper than my boat is set up for. Was making the turn down near the south end and marked a ton of fish (small ones it turned out) at about 20 fow. Dropped the anchor and put out our lines with a mixture of power bait (on slip sinker rigs to keep it from floating up, up and away....[
] ) nitecrawlers, and even a few odd Mussels I took with me. We weren't in place long before I got the first hit of the morning. A fair sized Rainbow, released. Then a small Perch. And that's how the day went. One of us catching something every few minutes. Mainly Perch, but at least one small (very small) LM Bass, and one decent sized Bluegill.
Saturday we headed over to Benson Marina. Day was quite warm and very calm. Water was pretty shallow, just about at the minimum point for me. But we were able to stay in 1.9 to 3.0 fow in most places. Was another day of just fun hookin and boatin little Mud Cats. Oldest son took the day with the largest catch, a junior sized Carp.
Packed it in about 2 P.M. and got back to Hyrum campground to clean up and relax awhile before heading into Logan for dinner. By the way, thanks Jeff. The recommendation of the Bluebird was perfect. Great food, fair price and we left so stuffed we could hardly move.
Packed up Sunday morning and headed back to Ogden. Boys had to get back to their schedules today, but I was off one more day. Got a real strong gut feeling about Willard Bay this morning, so I figured, aww, why not ? Been skunked 16 out of 20 trips up their this season, whats one more.
Well today was the change. Got to WB south just as light enough to see. Wind was blowing up some good whitecaps , so I just sat at the top of the ramp hoping it would calm as the sun cam up. By about 7:30 it was still quite a bit more wind than I wanted to deal with in the TinCan. Went back down the road and got some fresh coffee, and a pastry. When I got back the wind had calmed to a nice breeze. I got out on the water about 9:20 a.m. and headed straight for my favorite Feed Lot spot. Dropped anchor in about 12-13 fow, dropped one line in with a worm and one with a Mussel. Didn't have to wait long. The hits started with an old hit and haul butt reel stripping run that could only be a WB Wiper. Yup, finally got one this year.[shocked] followed by 7 more and 3 cookie cutter Cats. Even got one Wiper double. One on a Mussel, one on a worm, at the same time, heading in opposite directions[crazy]. Boated them both.
Bout 11:30 seemed like the wind was coming back up, I was out of bait, and decided to call it a GOOD day. Hit the cleaning station with 3 Wiper, and 3 Cats that all were gracious to accept my invitation to come home with me for dinner
