I'm not from Utah but have lived here for a few years and only took up fishing again recently now that some of my kids are getting older. We have only been trout fishing thus far and used only powerbait and salmon eggs. We've had some success with both. I want to stock my tackle with lures and other baits that are good for the local fish here in Utah. What advice can anyone give me on what lures, bait, etc. to buy to fish mainly trout as well as I would like to start fishing for bass this year for the first time. They seem to be fun to fish from what I've seen and read and would like to try my hand at them. Thanks to everyone for your help
I'm going to assume that you have spinning gear. If not, a decent medium-light to medium action 7' rod with matching reel is in order. I strongly prefer 10# Nanofil line with a flourocarbon leader of that same test for bass. (Go a bit lighter in the leader for trout.)

Lures are more difficult to recommend. It's hard to beat jigs with plastic trailers, small swim baits, spoons, and small spinners for trout. The good folks at Anglers' Inn, Scheels, Cabelas, or Sportsmans Warehouse can offer lots of local recommendations.

must have for trout is jakes lure in several colors. also kastmaster in all the colors. a fly behind a bubble works great also. there is tons of stuff for trout. but dont forget about our catfish. pretty tasty and loads of fun to catch.

Nightcrawlers or Gulp! maggots to tip your lures. A tipped lure turns a chaser into a biter. Kastmasters in various sizes 1/4 ounce to 1/2 ounce for medium action, 1/16 to 1/8 for light action. Get an F5 or F3 floating rainbow Rapala, drift it down a river over a hole, flip the bail down and let it swim in a holding position with the occasional tiny upstream jerk, make sure you have some lemon pepper and butter because you'll be using it later.

Agreed, and to add to the Kastmasters a good assortment of Jake's spinners are a trout favorite as well.
