I decided to fish Mammoth since I hadn't been up there since August 4th and it is still too hot to fish Starvation again. I got there around 8:00 and launched the tube near the middle of the reservoir. The weather was cool and calm. There were already two boats on the water and another one launching as I came by the ramp. Before the day was over there were seven boats, a couple of other kick boaters, and one bank fisherman. I have never seen more than two or three boats on the pond at the same time before. Everyone seemed to be catching some fish except the guy on shore. I left about 3:00 when the skies started to darken.
I used a fast sinking line (#8) and various size 6 and 8 bead head woolly buggers and crystal buggers. The water temperature was 59-61 degrees and the visibility in the water of about 7'. The reservoir is 65% full (down about 14') and still going down. All of the days catch were tiger trout from 13" - 17" long. I have a hard time keeping those tigers on for some reason. I didn't fish last week so I could use that for an excuse but I think I'm just getting old and slow.[:/]
It was a nice day to be on the water and this is my favorite time of the year to be in the high country. Some of the leaves are just starting to color up.[
