I took my son-in-law and my cousin sturgeon fishing in Idaho this week. It was my son in laws' first time. We left Brigham at 4 am and was on the water by sunrise. After checking several spots with the sonar and seeing nothing, we finally spotted some about 8:30 am. We had put only 2 of our 6 poles out before one of the rods was dancing in the rod holder. I set the hook and handed the pole to my SIL newbie.
This the video of the fight. The rod butt was too long and the fighting vest was not adjusted to him. Cousin Gene had to crunch up the vest to help Russell battle the beast. The fish measured 7'7", weighed 237 lbs. at 40 years old. It was the biggest of the trip.
We caught 11 sturgeon in the first 3 days between 4ft and 7'7" and 1 more in the next 2 days after Russell had to go home early. I guess he was our lucky piece because day 4 we caught nothing. Day 5 Gene lost a big one when his 65lb braid broke below the boat. I caught a 4 footer, then hooked a huge one that jumped completely out of the water with a foot clearance between it's tail and the water. It looked REALLY big. After fighting it for a long hard battle using 100lb. braid, my rod broke just above the handle and broke the line in doing so. We left soon after. It was a great 5 days of fishing with 3 of the fish jumping out of the water after hookup.
I am now hunting for some heavier rods.

Great video Hue. I like the harness that you designed so that you could keep Russell inside of the boat. There is such a small margin for error with those huge fish and when that small margin is crossed, broken rods and broken lines are the result.

We ended up adjusting one harness for Russell and a second one for Gene and me. We were concerned about Russell being pulled overboard, but he did fine. We ended up with about 30 minutes of videos from all the fish. Mostly views of bent rods and backsides[laugh].
I may have had the drag a little too tight. Had set at 22lb. on the 100lb. braid. Ok for the 8500 Fin-Nor reel but not for the Bill Dance MH catfish rod.
Sure wish that I had picture of the big one that completely left the water and broke my rod.[Sad] I wish more that I had landed it.[Wink]
