I think it does. We have found that if there is a full moon the fish don't bit hardly at all.My aunt swears the only time to fish is at night during a full moon. I have never tried that so I really can't say.

I was taught that the "new" moon was the best time to fish. If the cows are lying down and not up and eating , you will not catch fish. Wind out of the east-fish bite the least, wind out of the west - fish bite the best! This is all from growing up in Iowa. TM

I belive thats it affects fishes feeding habits,it been my experence to catch fewer fish after a full moon.I think that kokanee and rainbows are very much affected buy a full moon.

I have used the full moon as an excuse for not catching fish for years. There does seem to a direct correlation between the fish that I catch and the condition of the moon. I also catch more fish in the afternoon than in the morning following a full moon. It seems to me that the fish feed all night and are not hungry until later in the day when there is a full moon. If there is nothing that proves this to be wrong, then that's my story and I'm stickin to it. DKSRenegade

I think to some small degree, yes, the moon phases affect fishing. The reason behind it is that a full moon will create a decent amount of light at night -- enough that fish can move into the shallows and see the baitfish and feed at night, but it's still dark enough that they are safe from aerial predators such as eagles or osprey.

Conversly, when there's a new moon, fish can't see at night so they must actively feed during the day. So, basically, around the full moon fish at night and you should do pretty well. Around the new moon the day should be good fishing.

I'd say sometimes it does and sometimes it doesnt. I haven't had a time when the bass would bite like crazy when the moon phase said they were supposed to.

I believe that it does effect the fish. Especially carp. I mean when i got carp fishing on a new moon i may not catch as many in one night that i would a full moon. I do not believe that it effects panfish but i really dont know because it dosnt matter when i go i always catch them. I couldnt tell you that it effects bass because i am not that much of a bass fisherman. I believe that it all depends on the weather and what time of year it is and conditions of the water(weather the clarity is clean or dirty and is there any chemicals in the water you know stuff like that)

I do alot of cat fishing at night during the summer, and a full moon does make a differance. cats are way more active when there is a full moon.

[crazy] I fish for bluecat and flathead during the day with my clients. I find that the new moon is the best fishing for me while the full moon is least productive.

Interesting about how nighttime catmen have opposite opinions of preferred moon phase from daytime catmen...

Hey there TubeN2,

I've never mooned the area I've been trying to catch fish from so I can't say![Wink][Wink]

[cool][blue]The full moon is good for providing an excuse when you don't catch anything. The truth is that there are no absolutes. You can't use either never or always when applying the phase of the moon to fishing.[/blue]

[#0000ff]There are two influences of a full moon period. One is the increased gravitational pull of having the sun and moon lined up directly opposite each other. That increases pressure somewhat, but when fish move up and down in the water column, it is negligible as an effect on feeding.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]The increased light factor can be an influence. In clear waters, where the fish are sight feeders, they will feed more at night because they can. They can see prey better, so they feed at night under relative cover of darkness and digest during the daytime.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Much of the effect of the moon on fishing is species and time of year specific. Some fish rarely feed at night anywat...like yellow perch. Others are well known night feeders...like trout, bass and walleyes. The full moon provides more light and they feed more.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Bass chasers often rely on the full moon during the spring fling...bass spawning time. Most tell you that they do better for the two or three days around the full moon, during the spawn, than before or after.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Salt water surf fishing can often be gangbusters during a full moon. The increased gravity makes for higher tides, and the surf fish are able to chase small surf zone invertebrates...like sand worms and sand crabs...in the higher water.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]I have had some of my most enjoyable fishing trips on the "full moon in June" on several lakes, over a period of many years. When the weather is clear and calm, with a bright moon, lots of fish will come right up near the surface. I have enjoyed topwater action at night on crappies, bass, sunfish and even a few stray misguided catfish.[/#0000ff]

[#0000ff]Like many fishing subjects, this one will get a lot of opinions. But, my opinion is that the skill of the angler is ALWAYS more important than the phase of the moon.[/#0000ff]

[Smile] Fishing with a full moon on a clear night with a slight breeze is always better. It may or may not effect how the fish feed but you don't need a lantern on so you can see so it sure cuts down on the bugs. That makes any fishing trip better in my books. But thats just my opion, some people may like the bugs.[Wink]

I think it depends on what you are fishing for i fish 99% of the time for lake trout and i think a full moon is the worst! It alows the fish to feed all night and then they only bite for a very short time in the morning.

These are all honest and respectable opinions. I, personally have caught fish with or with out full moon. I have also been skunked in the same spots, with the same tackle, with or without the full moons.

Please keep your opinions coming. There are more anglers out there to answer this poll.

Thanks to those whom have contributed and thanks to those who will add to this thread.[cool]

Yes! That is all I know.

Well my experence is Full moons are for night fishing. The fish seem to be up all night ambushing their prey. Makes day time fishing a bit slow.

I agree very much with TubeDude.

One thing that I don't remember reading in his dissertation is that with the full moon, the level in the water in which the plankton are staying will affect where the fish are feeding. If you can figure out that particular level, chances are you'll have a better chance at catching on a full moon.

I've heard that gravitational pull and barometric pressure also have an affect on the level in which the plankton are active.

Just something I picked up from reading In-Fisherman magazine on a special they had regarding barometric pressure but they also said these are theories and not one thing is 100% true but that all aspects play a roll together and even then, only one rule stands true 100% of the time. There is always an exception.

Full moon seems to increase our catch in salt water, but have never caught alot of fish on the days the moon phases say will be good. I've learned not to trust them.

[Smile] In a article in the In-fisherman magazine , it showed when Big pike were caught , and the out come was that three days before and after a full moon were the best , and the three days before and after a new moon were second best !! The stats were taken from people through out the country from when their big pike was caught !! Myself , i've had good and bad results , but either way , it beats working !!!!!
