SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: For the first time this season, steelhead will planted here this week and next week. They will join the regular Mt. Lassen Trout Farms trophies in the lakes' complex, and the rainbow trout action has been fair to good, especially for bigger fish. Over the past two weeks, there have been 38 trout better than 10 pounds landed. Best this week: John Chapman of Yorba Linda had an 18-pounder, while Mark Reed, Orange, landed a 16.9-pound trout. Samantha Gray, Anaheim, had a 16.1-pound trout, while Holly Gray, also Anaheim, landed a 14.9-pound trout. Kevin Roe, Chino Hills, caught a 15-pounder. The best action continues to be on floating baits like Crave Nitro Dough in rainbow and chartreuse, small lures like Kastmaster, Rapalas, or Roostertails, and tiny jigs doused with Crave Gravy or Grease and fished on light line. For more information call (714) 632-7851 or log on to The Lakes' website at www.fishinglakes.com.
ANAHEIM LAKE: Closed for season. For more information, call (714) 996-3508 or log on to the lake's web site at www.fishinglakes.com.
IRVINE LAKE: Trout fishing has been fair to good on Power Bait, inflated nightcrawlers, or Power Worms. No boats were allowed on the lake Sunday or Tuesday due to high winds. Since the wind was blowing toward the west shore, most anglers sought cover by Trout Island. Fishing should improve with better weather. The lake will receive a 10,000-pound plant from Mount Lassen on Wednesday that will include fish to 18-0. The President's Day weekend will feature a "Triple Header" derby with float tube, kayak, and freelance divisions. There will be an additional $20 entry fee on top of the lake's entrance fee to enter the derby. There will be cash and prizes for each division. Robert Bilevich, Lakewood, caught a 9 3/4-pound rainbow on Power Bait on Santiago Flats, while George Hess, Riverside, landed a 5 1/2-pounder on a Mepps spinner off the west shore. For information, call (714) 649-9111.
LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: Trout fishing continued at a fair to good pace over the week, with a slowdown for fly-fisherman after rain on Monday. By Thursday fly anglers float tubing the flats were catch and releasing 30 to 40 trout per angler. Drifting zebra midges has been the best method, with the hot colors being black/silver with a silver head, brown with a gold head, and olive with a gold head. Anglers are keeping the bottom midge nine to 10 feet under the indicator. Inflated nightcrawlers, Power Bait, salmon eggs, mini-jigs or slow trolled Norman crankbaits are also being used to take limits of fish to 5-0. The lake received another 5,000-pound stocking of trout on Tuesday night. This stocking should include a good number of larger, hook-jawed males.
