Last fall I promised my son-in-law's 87 year old father that I would take him on a sturgeon trip to Idaho like I took his son last summer. The weather finally gave us a three day window this week. Neither of his sons were able to go with us to help with him of pull the anchors for me, so just the two of us went.
We hit the river about 9:30 wind was 8-10 mph and overcast. He had no experience casting a rod since he had only trolled for slimmers and kokes. I put a fighting harness on him, baited the hooks and cast our lines out and at 10:30 we had our first tug. I set the hook and handed the rod to Hyrum. When he and the rod started to go overboard, I decided it might be best to loosen the drag a touch. 30 minutes later, we measured the fish at 4'10". Not until 4:00 and several locations later, did we get a second fish at 4'5" caught by Hyrum, followed by a third 30 minutes later. It was 6'7" also caught by Hyrum. I got zeroed this day.
Day two wind 6-8 mph partly cloudy. This day was for me with a 4'0" and a 5'0", and none for Hyrum.
Day three was cloudy but the water was like glass. The first fish was for me at 5'5". With only an hour before our planned departure, we relocated. Hyrum instantly got 5'3"on and landed it with 15 minutes to spare before leaving. He was now 1 fish up on me. I told him that we had to stay until I caught another to make us even. Apparantly the fish miss-understood and Hyrum was now fighting his second fish ending up the day with a 5'7"er.
It was a great trip for both of us. Had a couple leap out of the water after being hooked. Had another jump out not 2 feet from my seat and scare the crap out of me. With a total of 8 fish we had great bragging rights and some good pictures to show the family. Hyrum didn't catch one as big as his son did last summer(7'7"), but out numbered him 5 to 2.
It is always a joy when you can give someone an experience of a lifetime in their later years of life.
Looking forward to my next trip.

Awesome!
How awesome. I’m super jealous as this is my bucket list. I’m glad you were able to get him out there and have some success!!

Yes, you are the source of this affliction. I wish that there was a way to stock them in the Bear River so we wouldn't have to travel so far. haha.
