Made it up the big hill today on my Snowmobile and got onto the ice. 6-7" solid inches with not a soul around.
I got a late start becasue I had to go get my Snowmobile out of storage and make sure it started! I didn't get it out last year at all so I was optimistic that it would start without any issues. Thanks to some starting fluid it fired up and we got on our way.
At the Woodruff Creek Road turnoff, there were a lot of other truck tracks so we ventured in with my 05 Dodge Dakota in 4 high gear dragging the snowmobile trailer. We pulled over at the last pull off (.25 mile before the bridge) and unloaded. We made it up the hill and down into the reservoir, but saw fewer and fewer truck tracks as we ascended. No trucks had made it up and over so we had the place to ourselves. If you are going to go with a 4X4, it will need some ground clearance and I would recommend chains. I did not drive the snowmobile on the ice becasue we were the only ones around and we started seeing and catching fish within 30 yards of the shore. (Plus, I broke through in a snowmobile there right at the edge a few years ago after a warm spell and the experience gave me a healthy dose of respect for what to do and what not to do on the ice especially if you are 2 miles from your truck in mid-teen temperatures!!)
We started fishing about 11:30 and fished until 3:00. Between my son and I we caught 11 and released 5. Most were good thick cutthroat trout. All between 14 and 16" long. We let the shorter and skinny ones go
We fished in 30 FOW and caught most just off the bottom, but saw many up at the 15' range and caught a few there. They seemed to like a pink jig head with a green plastic jig tipped with a night crawler. Like last week at Scofield we got a lot of lookers (>20) which made the time pass very quickly and most of the bites were very light. I was surprised to get several bites on a dead stick.
On our way down we had a 'yard sale' when my ice sled tipped over (need to get a snowmobile attachment) and we must have missed picking up my Stanley Classic Vacuum Insulated Bottle. It is full of cocoa. If you happen to see it PM me!
Great day and I will be heading back there in the next few weeks.
