thanks for the advice I tried that all summer and it didn't work. but I will keep working it if you have any sugestions on lures that would be nice. I have a few mepps musky killers and some perch rapalas that I usually use,

ON OVERCAST DAYS I FISH A BIGG BLACK MEPPS WITH A GOLD BLADE.. AND I FISH IT DEEP BY THE DAM. BUT IF IT IS SUNNY I USE A SMALLER ORANGE MEPPS WITH A GOLD BLADE.. BUT MOST OF MY FISH ARE CAUGHT ON CASTAIC SWIMBAITS.... THE BLUEGILL IS THE BEST. AND MY GO TO LURE IS A FIRE TIGER A/C PLUG. THAT IS WHAT I CAUGHT MY 46' INCHER ON THIS FALL.

GOOD LUCK

Lures= 7" or 9" clown Assasin,#11 or 13 jointed Rapala,#5 or 6 musky buck spinner,finnagans minnows.

steel leader 9" or 12"

10 lb mono or 14 lb fireline

when the water is at its highest work the outside edges of submerged trees with good steady retrieves. if you can find two groups of trees with a opening between them it is almost a guarantee.

HFT is right the assasins and rapalas seem to be the ones most people were useing a lot last year. I use j13 rapalas alot and bucktails, but the lure I use most is a 6" grandma in perch. you cant find them in stores here but go to www.muskyshop.com to see them. the jake lure is as close to them as you can get here james got me a 12"jake in firetiger last year and I hooked one with it. but like said before don't give up sometimes it takes 10,000 cast to hook one. look for more info to come about the musky class in april. at it I'll give you info about the fish places in utah to find them,how to handle the right how to build a musky cradle net , show lures from across the us and lures that work most here. so plan on going oh and dont forget some cook food there from old coot

How about baby ones? They planted the lake out here and I thought I'd start on them this year. They are about 20-22" now. Can't keep one until 40" of course, but I thought if I started this year nad kept up on patterns and behavior that I would have a better chance when they get big. Artificials only for now. I have a lot of Pike gear and i guess some of that might work. I have husky jerks and musky in-line spinners, lots of larger spoons. I could probably use a few bigger crankbaits, but I have several around 5" and a couple 7". they allow bait, but I don't want to kill a fish I have no plans on eating. I don't mean or want to get the whole live vs artificial thing going again. I just prefer it that way for me when I am releasing fish.

What tips would you have for smaller water? Good sized pond or tiny lake to give you an idea. Loads of feed fish (Bluegill, Sunfish, Chubs, Smallmouth, Rainbows). Maybe 30 feet deep in the middle, I'll have to check that. Reasonable Willow tree, weed, and rock structure bordering the lake. Not much structure within the lake except a larger grassy rock island near the earth dam. Straight line (pretty much) Earth dam with almost no structure. Inlet to the West side of the dam in canal to larger stream form. One good undercut (about 20 foot across and 10 feet back) about 15' underwater on an average year where the inlet used to run over the rocks. Decent rock structure along the West side that holds a fair number of small Smallies. Across from the dam is a shallow slope grassy shore with just some shadow from weeds and Willows.

Wow! I didn't realize I knew that lake that well. Anyway, what and where would you suggest for something like that?

I hope I can make it to your class this time.

Please do post the info on the class when things are set up. That sounds fun! I've been lucky enough to get one right at 40". But that's not what we were fishing for at the time. We were trolling around Cemetery Point for smallmouth with 2" perch colored Shad-Raps. Boom! Down went the rod tip, and I fought that guy for over 30 minutes on 6 pound test line. And actually landed him! Had him hooked right in the corner of the mouth, or I know he would have shredded that line.

first musky can eat something up to 1/3 its own size. but if you try and find lures the same size as the bait fish in the lake you do good. as for lures I'd fish pike size lures or bigger bass lures for those fish, but dont forget trout sized lures also. if you can't tell I'm saying try it all use things that you know how to fish most that will help you out the most. spinners are the #1 lure for musky in the USA and the reason why is that it's so easy to use and hard to mess it up. (the fish do hit them alot also) if you want I can try and get out that way sometime in may and show you some things (do a small class or some thing out there) I was wanting to try it out there this year anyway.
