I was looking forward to getting out after the cold weather this week. Last week, it was 12" of slush under a soft snow crust. But, fishing was great.
Today, the slush was there, but the upper crust was strong enough, I never stepped through. There was maybe 6-10" of snow on top of the crust. The snowmobiles stayed on top and there was never an issue of sinking into the slush. Last week wasn't an issue either, until you were walking. I wouldn't attempt a 4 wheeler, or anything like that.
Fishing- We started off hot and then it quickly died. We moved and found another hot spot where fishing was quick in 30' of water. Nearly all fish were on the bottom. Most hookups were made after dropping to the bottom and jigging up just barely. The hot lures were green or white glow jigs tipped with wax worms. They were larger: 1/8-1/4 oz. We landed some on dead sticks with pink/white tube jig tipped with wax worms. Although, jigging was the key.
We left with a Cutt just under the slot and a fat 18" sucker for later cut bait. We landed a lot of fat Cutts and no Rainbows. We thought we were going to bust the slot multiple times, but they were just fat, and that made me think they were longer than they were. So close, but not there. 18-20" was the norm.
Good Luck
