HEAVY TACKLE IS IT CHEATING OR NOT, FAIR OR UNFAIR. I SAY WHEN YOU GO FOR THE BIG ONES IT'S A MUST. I,VE BROKE TOO MANY LINES NOT TO HAVE A COUPLE OF HEAVY RODS READY FOR CERTAIN CONDITIONS IE MILFOIL SO THICK YOU CAN WALK ON IT.

Heavy tackle is always a must when certain conditions call for it. Sometimes heavier line is necessary for certain types of structure. I am not familiar with milfoil. I do fish alot of underwater weeds in the fresh water and lots of kelp in the salt water. That's where heavier line is important. Also if you are fishing heavy underwater structure. ie: logs, trees, and fallen brances. Those can do a number on your line.
There are some types of line that are designed for such use.

Hey there fyshrmn,
If you're fishing in the open salt and the bottom is way, way down there, anything more than 8 pound test is chicken!
That ought to get a bunch of guys yellin'! teeth! gill plates!, bony whatever!, shock strikes! weight of lots of line out!, resistance generated by said line going thru the water at hght speed! nyaaaaaaaaaah I don't wanna hear it!

I would definitely have to say that heavy tackle is necessary at times. From my own experience, fishing the lillypads and getting the fish out of there when they take your lure off the top. I pulled my friends small boat and anchor about 20 feet closer to the pads while muscling the fish out. Glad I had the heavier line!
It also helps to have heavier line when you cast into the tree branches as I've done several times last year. Hehe.

let me sum it up this way you would not go fishing for 200# tuna useing ultra lite tackle

That is correct aquaman. Nor would you fish for Crappie or bluegills with 20lb test.[cool]

I usually fish for crappie or bluegill with whatever is on my line at the time (usually between 8 and 30 lb test). Maybe if I actually used lighter line I'd catch more.
Maybe I should invest in an ultra-light instead of using my med-light ugly stick and 2-4 lb test. Hehe.

Lighter equipment is usually better for the smaller fishies.

not only is light line fun for small fish ( and big ) little crappie jigs just will not pull the heavy line tight there for you will miss many bites you never knew you had
