My 8 year old son and I gave Utah Lake a shot today. We have a small row boat, which is actually an upgraded Coleman Crawdad.
We launched from Lindon Marina around 7:20am and arrived at the mouth of Battle Creek around 7:35. There were several people fishing in and around the marina dikes. There were a few kayakers fishing in the area of Battle Creek when we arrived there. We tried to pick up a few white bass for bait, but didn't get any. And since we hadn't seen anybody catch anything at all, we didn't try very hard and turned our focus to cats.
We parked near the reeds about 100 yards north of the mouth of Battle Creek and baited up with Bar S hotdogs. It wasn't long before I had a taker. At first I figured I had a big carp because of the sheer strength I felt on the other end. We fought it out for more than ten minutes. My wrist was getting tired. I had to play it easy because I was using 8 lb test and the fish made many runs and turned the boat back and forth several times. But finally we netted a 27 inch cat. And this time I did NOT put it on a chain stringer, so it never got away.
For the next little while the action was fairly fast and steady. We netted 3 more cats and a small bullhead. Then the bite seemed to slow down, so pulled up anchor around 10:00 and headed back to the docks.
While we were anchored near Battle Creek, a few boats came around, tried there luck, and moved on without catching anything that I noticed. On the way back in, we saw a guy catch one very small bass from the dike at the mouth if the marina. The W was almost nonexistent.
For us it was a great succes because we had fun. My boy says he really loves fishing with me. And I love having him along.
