Started my 3 weeks vacation. Had to take care of some errands so didn't get to the Bear River until 11 a.m.
First stop is where the wife caught her 2 contest Cats, so I went there with the intention of staying until I caught something, ran out of bait, or it was time to quit.
Well I did catch something............[sly] It isn't the smallest cat on the contest, but it's my smallest this year.......[laugh]
Thought that maybe the catching and size would improve..........it didn't [:/] [b]BUT [b] the bugs sure got intense.
Moved to another spot that I have skipped the last few trips. Bugs worse......fish worse.
My cut carp was getting a bit old, so was running one line with a worm, and one line with the old carp meat, hoping to hook up a fresh bait. Saw lots of Carp slurping and jumping, even saw a couple young guys bow hunting them. But they were all more interested in love than food. Moved to my 3rd and last spot for today, same tactic. One line with worms, one with carp meat (about my last couple chunks).
Got settled, bugs not as bad cuz started getting a good breeze. Line with the worm took off down steam...........grabbed the pole.....WOW lots of weight !
Well it was a junior Cat that had wrapped my line around a water logged branch about 5 feet long and 2 inches around. I did get the wayward kitty up on the bank, then spent 10 minutes getting my line untied from the branch. OK, not my best day ever, but not my recent skunks either.
Released the junior kitty, tossed the branch back in the shallow area below me, re-baited that hook with my last chunk of old carp meat. Cast about 3/4 of the way across the river, bait and weight hit the water and I didn't even get my bail closed when big Cat of the day hit the bait with a very bad attitude, ran about 10 feet downstream, then reversed direction so fast, my line bird nested on my reel cuz of the sudden slack. Ended up landing that one hand over hand with my pole leaning against my chair. I'll say one thing for that new orange Catfish 30 lb. mono I bought this year, it looks like a real disaster all nested up on a spinning r eel, but it came back out easy with no knots.
Landed Mr. Cat-attitude, collected his vital stats (weight and length) and released.
Not big enuf for a score bump, but enuf to keep the skunk from hitching a ride home with me. 25 inch, 5 lb. 13 oz.
So I'll count vacation day 1 in the win column.
