Wondering about the boat ramp at porcupine. Can I put my 18' tracker in? What are the road conditions and is it wakeless?

I haven’t been up there this year but it is for sure wakeless.

Thanks for the response. Is it a dirt road and how is the boat ramp. I was up there as a kid but I don't remember anything about the boat ramp.

There are 2 "ramps". The first ramp is quite steep, but you can easily launch your boat. The second ramp is near the inlet, and when the lake is full, is typically the preferred ramp for bigger boats. The last report I heard was the road is pretty rough, so take your time so you don't rattle your boat around too much.

The dirt launch area is the first one you come to and is very steep and full of rocks. I launched my old boat - a 16 ft Tracker Targa - several times from the area. I will NOT even try to launch my 20.5 ft ThunderJet from that area.[/#800000]

[#800000]The second launch area is a dirt parking area and sand beach to launch. I have launched the old Tracker and the new ThunderJet there with no issues other than having to get the beach users to move when pulling the boat out.[/#800000]

[#800000]You will NEED a 4-wheel drive tow vehicle to launch at either area.[/#800000]

[#800000]The road in is rough and dusty from below the dam until you get to either launch. The width varies from single lane to just BARELY 2 lanes all the way in with lots of curves/bends. There is an LDS camp just past the back of the reservoir and gets heavily used on weekends. That equates to lots of idiots driving cars and trucks way to fast for those road conditions, so go slow and be very alert.[/#800000]

[#800000]The reservoir IS wakeless and IS listed on the Utah DNR list of wakeless waters. You will find some fishing folks ignoring that rule, but will not find any power squadron folks up there. Fishing boats, kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes is the norm.

Thanks for the info, Bob. You always give solid, detailed, reports and it doesn't go unnoticed.

I second the 4x4 required for anyone launching a boat bigger than 12 or 14'. Definitely dont try it in a minivan.... watched someone try to pull out their boat and what a circus it was.

The East launch drop off very quickly, so be prepared for that.

Thanks for the info.

It's not very easy to launch, but is doable... no docks or conveniences for getting in and out of the boat, all done from the shore... I do have one question for others, I noticed a "roadway" that goes down into reservoir last winter along the reservoir bank on the west of the creek at the top launch area. I pulled my truck down there to load my ice sled last year and was wondering if that works for launching a boat? It isn't as steep as the main launch area at the beach, although it is narrow and may be tough to back a boat down, but looked better to me... I just haven't had a chance to go up in the summer much lately... Thanks J
