Took the fam and friends to the gorge for the holiday weekend, I pulled a camper and my wife and 3 Yo followed with the boat (her first time towing the boat). Made it to the middle of the sisters when a tire shredded on the boat trailer ripping the fender off and throwing shredded tread through the back window of the truck! What was a 2.5 hour trip to the gorge turned into a 6 hour ordeal!! Once we arrived at the gorge in the late hours of the night we got out and did little fishing but had an absolute blast tubing and exploring the gorge (our first time with a boat) We spent most of the day out in horseshoe canyon when I got out my pole with 50lb test, I hooked into what would’ve been the biggest fish in the whole lake until I realized I was trying to pull up the bottom of the lake! (What an exciting 5 seconds tho). Made it home uneventful after that but managed to pull in my first lake trout a 23” 4lb beauty, we also caught two others in the 16”-20” range and one rainbow at 16”.
Today since we had one more day off we decided to head up to strawberry. Made it about 8 miles out of heber when what I first thought was nothing turned into a 7 hour nightmare. The truck trailer had started to make a slightly noticeable vibration and by the time I was able to pull over safely into the canyon things had gotten outta hand. Lugs came loose on the trailer opposite of the side already missing a fender and what I discovered were broken studs and wheel holes reamed nearly completely as wide as the lugs themselves. What I learned with this is good luck finding the parts you need (studs and or drums) for a trailer in heber. Long story short I hit up 3 tire shops, Walmart, oreileys, and Napa auto and $200 and 7 hours later we were back in business.
Jordanelle was a sight for sore eyes as we were pulling closer the normal rougher waters around 3 pm were calm and begging us to try them out so we pulled in and headed out towards rock cliffs. We trolled your usual Kokanee sets in the pink and orange squid varieties as well as pink and orange wedding bands. Hooked into one koke atleast I’m assuming since I never saw it but it took just a dodger and wedding band off the surface maybe 5 feet down and 50-70 feet back. After that it was slow until the evening hours when there was a flurry of action all at the surface. Wife and I both caught one Kokanee each and missed a few others. All in all things went bad about as much as the could have but we were able to salvage the day and pull in our first kokanees of the year!
