What is everyone's opinion on the crappie fishing at Pineview this spring? Will it be as good as years past or will they by hard to find like the perch were this winter?

With any luck and plenty of water i think that the crappie fishin will be great. I've talked to several guys who fish Pineview often and they believe that the perch have just moved from normal areas due to low water. They also said that it may also just be a down cycle for perch. But as far as the crappie they don't think there will be any problem and are planning on a good year. I hope that they are right.

I have never caught a crappie, and want to go this spring. I need someone to teach me how to catch these little guys. I hear they are great to eat.

Hi Polo. Good to have you back. Pineview crappie can be some of the most fun you can have with a rod in your hand!!
From a float tube you move around the shore line looking for cover in shallow water. All you need for tackle is a bobber[I like to use one that is weighted or use a bubble that you can add water to.] Small curly tail jigs in chartreuse color with a pink jig head is the best bet.Place the jig 4'to 8' behind the bobber and cast it out and then retrieve so slow that you do not cause a ripple or wake with the bobber. This is the trick. Many people real in too fast. Adjust the length that the jig is under the water until you start to catch fish. Be carefull when you land a crappie. I have had them pop a hole in by tube on several occasions. I now carry a patch kit and small pump with me. Watch for posts on the best location to fish but the east end by the swimming area and to the south of that are usually good spots. I hope to have a good season for crappie this year. They are great eating and a pain in the a$$ to fillet just like perch.Let me know when you can fish at Pineview. I would like to join you some time. DKSRenegade

I've heard that mid-June is the best time to go after crappie in Pineview. Have you found that to be true?

I would love to go, I went last spring with FishFearMe, (my first trip with a BFTer) [Wink] and i was doing the same thing as other fisherman, using the same jigs, and the group of oriental fisherman standing right next to me was knocking the crappie dead. I didnt have the luck, i kept joking with them about being so good with catching the fish. I didnt catch one, they had buckets full of them.

In years past, April and May have been hot. I have fished just after the ice is off and the weather was so cold my fingers were numb. Early in the morning is best. You can expect 60 to 80 fish days in the right conditions. I have not fished Pineview for several years because of poor fishing conditions but I think that this is the year of the return for me. As far as fishing in June, it should still be good. I just move on to trout by then.[After the run off] My favorite time for the Berry is in June. DKS
