Yesterday Mooseman, his son Tyler, and I made a trip to try to bump our scores in the catfish contest. They caught nine and I caught three. Tyler (Tyfighter) brought in a bumper. I think that puts him in second place in the youth division behind his brother Devin who looks to repeat last year's championship.
I felt a little bad about only getting three because I have set a personal goal of a certain number of cats caught this year and am several short with only a little time left to accomplish it. But we went out today and the tables turned. I caught ten and they got five. So things even out. A big part of our success has to do with a couple of items from Pisco. He shared some of his white bass and some flaits. We already had one clown-colored flait each and they have been really working great for us. Today he gave us a couple of firetiger ones and they worked great, too. Yesterday I had two fish swallow the one flait I had and I had to perform surgery to retrieve it. None took them deep today so thank goodness for that.
I caught a 26.5" and a 27.5 so no bumpers today. Ty gets the award for first fish caught and most excellent helper; he got me out of jams several times. Justin gets the award for being a great dad, patient, generous and kind.
We started fishing quite a way out from the start of the orchards in 9+ fow. The water was 57°. We went both ways. A little later in the day the electric motor quit so we drift-fished. That worked, too. When the wind shut off completely we reeled in and scooted over to the BS area, anchored up in four fow water, and tried some bobber fishing. Nothing. Thankfully the wind picked up a little again so we motored out to seven fow and drifted back in a couple of times. We caught fish there too.
I had a really great day but it was slow for the others. Well, we're going to give it another go tomorrow and that may bring more bumpers. We'll see.
