I am looking for some sucker, carp, chub fishes to take with me next week to the gorge for bait. the only i can find locally here in SLC is at sportsmans for $2.50 for a small filet. that wasnt that great looking. Does anyone have some they could sell or know where i could pick some at for better quality than sportsmans had or better price????

Most anything will work. Bring some uncooked shrimp. Like TD said lots of stuff will suffice. I had a buddy that used the cheapest fish right out of the sea food section for macks and it worked just fine.
Also you may be surprised. Sometimes you end up catching good bait if your lucky like a big old sucker or carp.
You might try catching a carp at a local pond like Bountiful or somewhere before you leave. Freeze it whole and it will keep nice til your ready to use it.

Left a 10 inch chub on the ice at Rockport yesterday. Sorry I didnt know you wanted it earlier.

I learned last summer, (even though i didnt understand the full reason then) to keep every chub, sucker or carp i catch. I used to catch and leave for dead all "garbage fish" Definitely seeing the price of cut bait at sportsmans yesterday, I will be catching and keeping alot more on "garbage fish". there are alot of people on this site that would pay good money for what we call garbage fish. So before throwing away that "garbage fish" bring it home freeze and post you have it. I am sure someone will want it, and worst case throw it away.
Chester- is rockport a good place in the summer or anytime to stock up on chubs????

i dont have any now, but i will save all the carp i kill this summer, so that i can help you out in future times.

I don't think Rockport is very good for chubs. I caught two last week. I sent them home with a guy for ferret food. This week my son caught one. Other than that I have never seen any there summer or winter. I have caught quite a few when I fish in Wyoming in the summer. Guess I'll have to freeze a few. Hope you find some.

With whirling disease and such, what are the issues with hauling fish or fish parts to different waters?

Hey polokid,, Last time I was at the Gorge (about a month or so ago) I only had an hour to spend fishing before dark and a blizzard landed in my lap at the same time..Whats more,, I didnt have the "Coldfooter Hilton" with me (its a long store,, but lets just say Starvation got in the way). At any rate,, I couldnt get away from Large chubs while fishing for bows 15 feet down in the back of a cove west of the Pipeline.. There were more than enough large chubs there for bait so if its chubs yer lookin' fer,, just spend an hour picking up yer bait before hand....
Good LUCK on the Mack's !! Be sure and let us know how you do and all the finer details.. This old coldfooter hasnt done to well on the Mack this winter altho I've only really had a chance to hunt them at Fish Lake in recent years.. While I'm not a complete stranger to the Gorge,, its been along time since I seriously fished it for Mack's at the Gorge (and was trolling at the time) so any advice is more than welcome!! Also,, any updates on ice conditions is welcomed too..
Thank's,, Coldfooter

Last year I needed some yucky bait to try to catch some cats at Utah Lake. I went to Wal Mart to the meat department and asked them if they had any old shrimp or fish they would be throwing out. The guy went in the back and brought me a pound of shrimp and a two pound salmon fillet. He charged me twenty five cents each. If I were really desperate I could have eaten this stuff but it was over the due date and I wasn't that desperate. I took them home, let them sit in the sun for an hour, and when I brought them in my wife yelled at me to get them out of the house because they stunk so bad. I caught some cats on the shrimp so it was worth the fifty cents.
It's worth a try. I have done this twice at Wal Mart now and have heard of people doing it at other grocery stores. Good Luck.

I was at Hooked Friday night, and I think they had some sort of sucker minnows or something like that. I wasn't interested so I didn't notice the price.
The Reams store in Layton has smelt and mackerel for pretty cheap. i would imagine that the others do as well.

I just chucked all of my old carp and sucker away yesterday, and I ran out of minnows the last time I fished browns. Sorry about that! It was all freezer burned and yucky lookin, though. I'll have to stock pile them carp I catch on the jordan this year. I should be able to start snaggen them within a couple weeks.
