With the algae bloom going on, are the white bass and catfish OK to eat? My neighbor caught a bunch and I was going to fillet and fry them for them. Thank with any info on this as I was planning this for tomorrow.
There has been no measurable toxic buildup in the flesh of any species in Utah Lake due to the algae bloom. There is the POTENTIAL for minor buildup, but no verifiable harmful effects have been observed in any humans due to consumption of Utah Lake fish...even during and just after the worst outbreaks of cyanotoxin algae.
But, as with the PCB concerns, you should always fillet and skin any fish you plan to eat. And most of the potentially hazardous goodies in the water tend to isolate in the internal organs...which you discard. So properly cleaned and prepared fish should present little or no concern.
