I was about 7yrs old when my father took my brother and I fishing for the 1st time. I older by 16 mos. My dad had a Glasply back then (1969-70) and he and my uncle Neil loaded up the boat with a couple a garbage cans and all the 5" chrome steel tube jigs with a trebble hook suspended from the bottom than one has ever seen. We made our way once on the water to a place in the san juans called thatcher pass. once there my dad and uncle feverishly handed out rods and barking out commands. Down to the bottom. You have to bounce it up and down and hang on tight. After a period to long to elaborate for a 7yr old we had managed to fill one can with 5 or 6 fish, rock cod, 1 red snapper, several other bottom fish. We were about to leave for the day reeling in when my Dad kept making comments about how he thought he had something on but each time he lifted the pole there was no resistance. After all the chatter and the pipe jig came to surface a small rock cod appeared and we noticed that the jig had passed through the gill plate so it was trying to free itself, as we all laughed in amazement the biggest damn fish I'd ever seen had it's jaws wide open headed straight for the rock cod. My dad began screaming he was about to lose this 5lb fish to this monster from the deep and my uncle began clubbing it with the gaff staph. Just then my Dad grabbed the gaff and with one lunge the 5' long monster was in the boat. Kids were crying, men were screaming etc. By the time the confusion was over that monster turned out to be a 55lb ling cod that filled the other can, and the stories that came from that day are priceless. And we kept the rock cod too. Since then I have passed the confusion down to my son and hope he'll be able to do the same. good luck and keep fishing<br><br>

Way to go dad. Storys like these are pricless. This is a great way to comunicate with the younger ones. Hearing this would want most young ones to keep their eyes and ears open for a special trip to pass on to their little ones of the future. Great communication skills you have developed.
