But in a B-29.

Had a 40-minute ride in the navigator's seat aboard "Doc" on Tuesday evening. Silky smooth air, the fall foliage, and a sunset landing to the background music of four Pratt and Whitneys.

Treasured memories.

Willard Bay - from a B-29 at sunset.
Now that is the way to start the day
I have been seeing "Doc" rumbling across our skies for a couple of days. What is the fee to get a ride? I have worked on 13 military aircraft and whenever I hear a jet flying over, I can't help it looking to sky to see what it is.

These are the aircraft I have worked on:
C141A-3yrs Travis AFB
C5A-3yrs Travis AFB
F4D-10yrs McClellan AFB, Hill AFB
F111-all variants 15yrs McClellan AFB
F106-5yrs McClellan AFB
T39-5yrs McClellan AFB
A10-15yrs McClellan AFB
A7D-2yrs McClellan AFB
KC135E,R-5yrs McClellan AFB
F15-5yrs McClellan AFB
B52H-2yrs TinkerAFB
T38-5yrs McClellan AFB
F16-12yrs Hill AFB
A10 APU-15yrs McClellan AFB
Doc departed Ogden for San Diego this afternoon. The fee for a 30-minute ride depended on where you wanted to sit. There were six seats in the rear gunner stations for $500. In the cockpit, the navigator, radio operator, and observer seats were $1200, and the bombardier seat was $1500.

If that seems high, realize that those four engines burn 100 gallons of avgas an hour -- each. Total cost to fly a B-29 is right at $5,000 an hour.
