Hey saw some "minnows" small 2 inch and smaller in a apartment pond today, looked great for bait. Wondering what bait fish/minnows you can run across here in Utah?

[#555555]I know you probably all ready know this but whatever you do, make sure you find out what kind of fish they are BEFORE you catch them. All Utah waters (well at least the ones I've encountered) have some kind of "bait fish" in them. [#000000]Whether [/#000000]they are sculpins, shiners, shad, chubs, suckers, or just small game fish, they are everywhere. The following is an edited excerpt from the fishing proclamation regarding bait.[/#555555]

[#555555]Bait
[/#555555]R657-13-12 [ol] [li] [ol] [li]Fishing is permitted with any bait, except corn, hominy or live fish.
[/li][/ol] [li]Game fish or their parts may not be used, except for the following: [ol] [li]Dead Bonneville cisco may be used as bait only in Bear Lake. [li]Dead yellow perch may be used as bait only in: Deer Creek, Fish Lake, Echo, Gunnison, Hyrum, Johnson, Jordanelle, Newton, Pineview, Rockport, Sevier Bridge (Yuba), Utah Lake, and Willard Bay reservoirs . [li]Dead white bass may be used as bait only in Utah Lake. [li]The eggs of any species of fish, except prohibited fish, may be used. However, eggs may not be taken or used from fish that are being released. [/li][/ol]
[li]Use of live crayfish for bait is legal only on the water where the crayfish is captured. It is unlawful to transport live crayfish away from the water where captured. [/li][/ol]

There are also specific regulations for some bodies of water. (ALWAYS check the proclamation.)

I know that many other states differ on the use of live fish for bait, but if one gets caught doing it in UT, they are in for a whopper of a fine! Even if the bait fish are caught from the same water in which they are used.

I hope this answers your question at least partially. I'm sure if you ask about a specific body of water a lot of people will be able to better respond.
I have seen several species here. In Utah Lake, there are Fathead Minnows, mosquito fish and golden shiners [rare].

The majority of the minnows you see in the local ponds are Mosquito Fish. They are used by the abatement guys to cut down on the mosquitos. They kind of look like a guppy. They are a species of guppy.
