the fish should be alright if your pulling the hook out of the lip, top/bottom of the mouth etc if your going to release the fish and it is gut hooked cut your line the hook will dissolve over time

[mad]Even if I am going to keep the fish, I wouldn't think of ripping out the hook. As previously posted they are living creatures too!

One more base to cover!!! Those guys on TV usually use barbless hooks. Those are alot easier on the fish end come out rather easy. It also makes it easier to loose a fish when you catch one.
Last though!!!! Barbless hooks are the hook of choice for Catch and Release fishermen as well as those whom are conservationalists.

yeah but ripping them out only hurts the fishes feeding and will cause deformates to the mouth area after several tips being hooked and ripped.

IF I GUT HOOK A FISH AND I'M GOING TO KEEP IT I GET THE HOOK BACK WHEN I CLEAN IT. IF I AM RELEASING IT I GOT A LONG PAIR OF NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS WHICH I GRAB THE POINT SIDE OF THE HOOK WITH THE I CAREFULLY REACH THROUGH THE GILLS WITH A SMALL PAIR OF SIDE CUTTERS AND CUT THE HOOK THE SIDE WITH THE EYE POPS OUT WITH LINE A LITTLE TWIST AND THE REST COMES RIGHT OUT. I JUST DON'T KNOW ABOUT LEAVING THE HOOK IN. IT WOULD BE KINDA HARD FOR ME TO SWALLOW WITH A 5/0 HOOK IN MY THROAT.

There is anouther post on here or in one of the mags I get about this topic. Here is what I remember of it: If you are catch and release fishing use barbless hooks and circle hooks are the best because they normaly hook into the side of the mouth. They are also easy to remove. If you need to touch the fish make sure your hands are wet, do not handle it long, do not grip it through the net because that will scrap the protective slime off of a fish. Do not touch the gills or they may bleed, killing the fish. Do not lip grip the fish because that adds undo strain and pressure to the fishs mouth and that could kill it. If the hook has been swallowed and the fish is deep hooked either cut the line or take the fish home with you for dinner. One last thing, have fun and eat some of the fish you catch.

Daniel, I've read the same thing somewhere. I think it was in a magazine.
Recently on In-Fisherman tv, they were showing how to retrieve a deep hook from bass through the gills. You actually reach through the gills to get to the hook, do your little twist and turn and pop the hook out. They say removing the hook with little to no injury, if at all possible, is much better than leaving the hook in.
I would never dream of ripping a hook out unless it was a garbage fish to be used as fertilizer in the garden, and I needed the hook back. Then again, the only fish I've ever done that to was a bullhead.
