I have tried several different tactics for these toothy critters and just cant seem to get a fish. I need help. Everyone else is gettin em just not me. Any color of jig produce more during the spawn or is it purely a territorial thing. If something crosses their nose they strike? I really want a walleye. Someone help please!![mad][mad][mad][mad][mad]

I haven't caught a ton but for me a pearl culey tail jig seems to work best. Fish real early or real late.

Hey loanfish long time no see. Good luck with a walleye this year. I went out once so far but I think it was too early. There was still ice on Utah Lake at the time, and I fished the state park in Provo where the river enters the lake. I haven't caught a walleye in a few years now.

I had pretty good luck the other day with red headed jig (1\16 oz with a white curly tail)

Hey cat_man how have you been? I've been out three times in the last week and a half and all I catch are gigantic carp. Twice out to lindon harbor once out to whaere the spanish fork river dumps in. We were in our tubes by the river and I think I had a bite there but im not sure. I have a hard time destinquishing the hits to the jig being dragged along the bottom and bumping against the rippled sandy bottom. If you know what I mean. We'll have to get together again this year for some catfishing.[

Yeah no kidding we'll have to go out again this year. I might be going out this Saturday to the outer dike of the Lindon harbor. Not sure what time I can get away yet. I got my little bro into float tubing so he's got one now too. I'd like to try along the dikes. Both the walleye and the LM bass should be holding close to the rocks. I'm not sure yet though.
You oughta save a carp and freeze it so you'll be prepared for the cat season coming up.

Let me know! I'll most likely be taking another stab at the walleye once or twice this week. I also wouldnt mind nailin a bass or 2

]Hey guys dont fret, I chased the old Eyes for 6 years until I hooked up with a guy from Minnesota, he taught me a few tricks and showed me what the heck I was doing wrong, you have to go about it completly different from what us old trout fishermen are used too, and they aint like Bass either, its all finesse, and presentation, I wouldnt mind sharing with you what it takes but its more of a show and tell sort of thing. so when your really pissed off give me a PM.[cool]

Personally The best thing I ever did for catching walleye was to ask Tube dude, and utwalleye for advice and if you are willing to do a lot of reading tube dudes "books" are awsome and full of usefull tips for fishing for those toothy critters.

I caught 8 of them one day at Willard while I was trying to catch a wiper (never did catch a wiper that day). Technique has a lot to do with catching them, but I find it interesting how many different techniques are used by the various experienced walleye fishermen/women and they all seem to have success. This will really frustrate you -- I took a nine-year old boy fishing (his first time ever fishing) to Deer Creek one day and he caught a 16" small mouth on his very first cast, and about 10 minutes later caught a walleye of equal size (he was casting a curly tail jig)! By getting some excellent instructions from Utwalleye and TD I have a pretty good idea of how to catch them, but all things considered, I would just as soon catch another species of fish that puts up a better fight and I don't eat many fish.

I feel your pain on the walleye. I have only caught 6 ever !!. Ive caught two this year so far. One on the jordan river & one at lindon. The one on the jordan I caught with a small chartruese Kastmaster & the one at lindon with a chartruese grub. It may be my year for the walleye ! ( Hopefully some more warm weather will help. ) Finally catching a couple of them got me pumped to keep trying. I will be going on a family camping trip to starvation in may hopefully I can hook into some there & the smallmouth in starvation are excellent. Good luck everyone !!!!!
Peace

If you get a chance and are in the Linden harbor area... stop by Mellennia Marine (next to I-15 and the lumber shop) and talk with Steve Partidge. He is probably the best walleye fisherman in the state and could get you goin in the right direction.[

Man I must have been lucky. My first spring ever trying for walleyes I caught a couple of them on chartreuse and orange curly tail jigs. I fished off the shore at the bubble up when the water actually made it that high and the walleye would come up there to spawn.
I also caught one out in my tube at the bubble-up where the water comes out of the pipe when they were in pre-spawn mode just by slow trolling an orange curly tail jig along the bottom. No fancy jigging, no jerking, no bait tipped hook. But, then I caught one the second year I tried and then I haven't caught any since then. (Although I've only just started trying for them again.)

I have caught hundreds, if not, then thousand of 'eyes. Gosh darn it, its all different from trout presentation... trout presentation is totally boring, and walleye presentation totally outshine any other presentation because it require tons of finessee. Sure they piss people off but that's acquired skill and knowledge.
First off, fish at night or early morning... they are there in the shallows... but during the day they are out in the deeper waters whereas trolling comes in the picture. Fish shallow in the waders or off shore shallows in a boat with a rock shelf that offdrops nearby... or get into the flats. Crankbaits at night along the shoreline works wonders at deer creek starvation etc. Utah lake is different case altogether. Will explain utah lake later.
That is the trick... and the rest is everything else other guys have said to you about colors presentation is true.

Ha ha, I know his brother, he has referred me to Steve Partridge of Millenia Boats. I have heard of his reputation as a walleye killer. His secret is to troll at night all night long at Deer Creek. His real secret about trolling shall remain safe with me as I swore on his brother's promise not to divilege stuff.

If you are trolling you might try a worm harness tied onto a bottom bouncer along the rocky shorelines in15-20 feet of water. If you feel any resistance, like it is snagged up, try to set the hook. And like others have said either late or early is best. Years ago I had success at Yuba with this method. Acey

hey lonefish i have always done good at utah lake on thin-fin's in red or blue.. and crawdad colored crank baits.. allways fish at night for the bigger fish.. and keep a white, yellow.black, twisty tail on hand. give each about 10 casts in the same area then move alittle and try again.. it's not tell about 10:30 to 11:00 pm that the walleye realy move in to the shalows so the later you stay at it the more likely you are to hit one..

I started fishing for walleye several years ago. I would rather catch a walleye than any other species of fish! There is, to me at least, more of a fishing challenge with walleye than other fish. I have learned most of what I know about walleye fishing from Tube Dude and Utwalleye and others on this board. I am continually learning how to catch them. I am now catching them, and having a great time doing it. Kent doesn't care about catching walleye and he always catches them when we are fishing together at Lake Powell. There is no justice!

That sounds like a great idea. That would also make me feel better about not catching one. LOL. I am up to try any water for walleye. I do agree with Kentofnsl everyone has told me they dont fight and just come in. But I have eatin the walleye and have to say it is the best fish I have ever eatin. So anyway the hunt is on![sly] I will take any invitation to go walleye fishing. Thanks guys for all the info. And now I have a computer again you might see more of me.
THIS IS THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is also the year for my Muskellunge![cool]
