A Lynn Haven man has been sentenced in Bay County court for his part in the killing of at least nine deer and dumping the carcasses off a Bayou George road in early October.

Elliott Charles Melvin, 18, 3323 Country Club Drive, will pay a $2500 fine; forfeit a rifle and shotgun to the state of Florida; have his hunting privileges revoked for three years; be required to perform 50 hours of community service with a wildlife or animal agency; be placed on probation for 12 months; attend a hunter safety course; write a letter of apology to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC); and, write an essay.

Melvin plead no contest and was found guilty of taking deer by illegal methods; willful waste of wildlife; and shooting from a road right-of-way. Two other defendants, Phillip David Christensen, 21, Youngstown, and Michael Edward Nelson, Jr. 28, Lynn Haven, still face their day in Bay County court.
FWC law enforcement officers said a total of nine deer were dumped at the end of Wedgewood Lane off Highway 2301 on Oct. 2 and 3. Some of the deer had the “back straps” or choice edible meat removed. The antlers had been cut off the bucks.
The investigation revealed that Melvin and the other defendants cruised a number of roads in Bay and Calhoun counties late at night in late September and early October shooting at deer feeding near the roadways.
