Hi,

New to the board - hope y'all are catchin' bigguns.

I will be camping through Utah in the second week of april, and need some advice on the following:

1. Are there any car-camping sites on either a,b, or c sections of the green that are *right on the river*?

2. Are the hike-in campsites on the B section improved? (fire ring, etc.)

3. How far are the car camping sites near the reservoir from *great* wadeable fishing on the A section? (drive time)

Would also be interested to hear any great/horrible stories of camping and fishing on the green.

Also, if I'm not asking too much in one post, I've been warned away from this area, because fishing pressure is so high, and float trips so frequent that wading fisherman must watch a constant parade. Any truth/comments on that?

Robert
FIrst of all what a topic for your first post. Welcome aboard! There are several people very familiar to those areas you are asking about, but I am not one of them. I am curious about finding out also. Maybe James at Hooked Tackle might be able to help out. If he's trolling the BFT board I'm sure he will respond. Good luck!

I'll tell you what I know, which isn't much.

A section: There is a campsite called Dripping Springs, you get there by heading to Little Hole from Dutch John and it is accessable by car. The campsite was burned in the fire and they are in the process of rebuilding it. You can camp in it right now, but I'm not sure if there is water available yet or even if the bathrooms are open. Dripping Springs campsite is about 15 min from the resevoir. There is NO camping along the entire A section.

B section: I believe there is walk in camping along this whole stretch. I you do however, know that you need to take sanitary products in with you and carry it back out. I do know there is a campsite at the end of the B section. I do not remember the name of it. This site is accessable by car.

Your best bet is to call Trout Creek Flies in Dutch John, they will tell you everything you need to know.

I'm surprised people have warned you to stay away. I agree that there are ALOT of people that fish the river but hey, there is a good reason why. The majority of the fisherman fish the A section, even if you hike in several miles you will still find guys there. If you hike down the B section there is not near as many guys. Even when there are alot of guys there that river is so big you can still get a good section to yourself.

West of the dam is the closest to the lake and river. Plenty of good primitive camping spots just out of town.

All the camping spots I've seen down river had fire pits and flattened spots for tents. They were next to the river in some nice places. I'm glad Lee's Ferry doesn't charge to camp up river.

I'd call and make reservations before or even just for info. That weekend might be already filled at all the campgrounds.

Are you going the week of the 10th or the 17th? I'll be out that way on the 17th. I doubt there will be much raft traffic. Unless things have changed that doesn't get going until around Memorial day. It can be a nuisance but it's still worth fishing.

One thing that you can do on section A is to reserve a car pool shuttle from Little Hole back to the spill way. The lodge will do it for a small fee. This way you can park at the top ,fish down to Little Hole {7 miles]and catch a ride back to your car. It is a great day walk and fish trip but there is no camping in this section. There are several camp grounds in the area,if they are open this time of the year. Section B walk in river camp sites are by reservation so call ahead if you want one of them. Remember that storms move in a lot of the time and in a hurry, so be prepared for it. Like others have said, the boats and toons should not present a problem this time of the year. Later in the season I say if you can't beat them join them on the water.DKS

Dripping Springs would be your best bet for the A section or upper B .

I haven't been there for a while , but that is where I would sleep when I went . It is open year round so I would think water would be available .

There is car camping in Browns Park , but better have 4X4 if it is raining out there . Night fishing can be a blast there on the Green , but be aware of the bears and other wildlife .

The c section has several camp grounds right on the river. The best are near jarvie ranch, there is excellant wading in the c section, and while the a and b sections recieve extreme amounts of pressure, the c section recieves little to none, and I find the c section to be the best fishing. Good Luck Lonnie

LAST NOVEMBER I WAS AT THE RED CLIFF LODGE JUST OVER THE DAM TOOK A TOUR THROUGH THE DAM AND THEN CONTINUED ON TO VERNAL TO GET BACK HOME TO SLC.....I FISHED A COUPLE SPOTS THAT WERE MAINLY BOAT LAUNCHES FOR THE RIVER RUNNERS....I DIDNT SEE ANY SIGNS THAT I RECALL FOR CAMPSITES OR ANYTHING. I THINK MOST OF THAT STUFF IS OVER NEAR GREEN RIVER WY, THERE WAS ACCESS TO THE RIVER BUT I DIDNT GO DOWN ALL OF THE ONES I SAW, AND THEN IT GOT LATE AND WE HAD TO LEAVE TO GET HOME. I KNOW YOU COULD PROBALY FIND A SPOT IF YOU JUST WANTED TO CAMP...BUT CAMPSITES I DONT RECALL ANY AROUND THERE, BUT I COULD BE WRONG, I WOULD CONTACT THE RANGERS AT THE FLAMING GORGE DAM THEY SHOULD KNOW OF ANY, IF ANY. HOPE THAT HELPS....I GOT THE NUMBER FROM DIALING 411 ON MY CELL WHEN MY BATTERY IN MY CAR DIED RIGHT UNDER THE DAMN AT THE FIRST BOAT RAMP...LIKE 200 YARDS FROM IT...I HAD TO HAVE ONE OF THE TROOPERS COME JUMP START MY CAR...MY WIFE WAS TICKED.....IT WAS HER FAULT THOUGH SO SHE WAS KINDA QUIET ON THE WAY HOME, AND WHEN I TOLD HER NOT TO TURN OFF THE CAR AGAIN IF SHE WANTED TO PLAY THE RADIO....SHE DIDNT. HA HA....GOOD MEMORY.

LATERS,

Thanks Lonnie (and everyone)

Lonnie: are the on-the-river campsites on C section drive in or hike in?
Hey Jacksonwy Glad I could be of some help,The campgrounds are drive in,the road runs along the river for several miles(there are roads on both sides of the river with several access points)the area also has alot of wildlife, lots of deer,a waterfowl refuge, cougars, kyotes ect...the jarvie historical ranch and visitors center is worth a look also(was an outlaw mecca in the 1800's)And again the fishing is good but can be spotty even within the same day.If you plan a trip you may want to ck with the browns park national waterfowl refuge(you can pull it up on the internet)they are right in the c section and will gladly give you river condition reports.By the way I was there last thur-sat and did quite well(see report back a page or two)Just keep an eye on red creek,it can muddy the water during heavy rain or run off.Good Luck and let me know how you do. jacksnowy,Don't let any body scare you away from the most beautiful river in the west. The red rock canyons of the A section are breath taking. The crystal clear water loaded with fish is more seduction than any fisherman can handle. I think someone is trying to keep it to themselfs. yes you have people but when you see it you will know why it is such a draw. Sometimes the fishing can be technical but with the right flys and rigging its all good.

The B section Has a wider variety of size to its fish, one cast it may be 6" the next 3lbs,do call to reserve the site by the river it could be taken.

The C section can be iffy on water,I drove by it sunday and it was muddy. It does have a wider variety of species.
