Full Version: EastCanyon. Why do I try?

I don’t know why I do it. I swore I would never go to East Canyon again, and that I would never believe that darn Ogden paper about where the great fishing was. I broke both of those today and my curse holds true. What more can I say but fished it for 6 hours, tried everything I could think of (even my new downrigger) and nothing. I would love to learn the secret of that place, but I need a teacher. If any of you East Canyon experts want a free boat ride let me know, I’m always a gluten for punishment and would love to go get skunked again as long as I had some good company.

Get ahold of Petty4life, he fishes it frequently, and seems to do well up there.

My son and I fished EC Saturday afternnoon as well. You may have seen us (blue pathfinder). We were fishing close to the small inlet just past the boat ramp. We fished from the bank and caught 1 good rainbow and lost 2 others using the secret weapon (worm) fished from the bottom. Next time you want to go let me know. But you may need to leave your boat home and catch a ride up with us and fish from the bank if you want to hook a few.

East Canyon can be a strange beast...some days you catch a ton, and others...nada! My self and petty4life hit it a few times last fall and had good luck from the boat, but on the ice we didn't really catch all that many. I hope it gets a good amount of water in it this year, between the drought ant the anchor worms, the fish have really taken a beating up there.

I haven't fished East Canyon yet this year, but my parents live in Morgan and I usually fish it quite bit. I have found that there is not much sense in trolling where you don't see fish on the finder. One day you will pick up fish at the south end of the lake, and the next week you will see them by the dam. We use downriggers and set the depth to wherever the fish are on finder (usually 20 - 30 feet), and troll popgear with a worm. We usually do really well once we find the fish, but that can take awhile.

WanaGoFishin,

I used to fish East Canyon a lot. For me the best thing to do was to fish early in the year, like in late April and May, and fish early in the day. I used to troll a popgear and a worm with lead core line, out about 3 colors. And I like to troll pretty slow. I like to go just fast enough to get the blades of the popgear turning. That was usually the ticket. I had many, many good days there for very healthy trout. I don't have a boat anymore and I find the fishing from shore to be pretty tough these days, so I haven't been for a while.

This is the first year that I have really fished East Canyon, did pretty well

ice fishing on the south end just north of the bouys, caught some nice 14 to 16

inch rainbows (fat ones). Went up last saturday (april 5) and caught the fish of my life, a 22" lake cutthroat

from the shore with a Rapala (what do you know the Standard got something right)
