][#004000][size 2]Went to Irvine Lake yesterday but left my tube at home. Rather windy at my house and as you may agree I don’t like tubing in the wind. Well there was no wind when I arrived at the lake, however within the hour the winds did kick up. Couldn’t fly fish or even bait cast into the wind very far. Tried the gulp samples - nice action but no results. Out came my light spinning gear. 6’ Fenwick 2-8 with a Shamino TX Quickfire ll 2-8. 4lb test & a 2lb leader. Was using power bait, a # 10 hook with a Carolina rig setup. Got lots of hits but from the feel of things they were small Bows. Then the guy next to me gets a mammoth hit. When he finally banks the fish it turned out to be a steelhead over 30”. Well I decided to give it a try. Only bigger hook that I had already set was to a Hayabusa red Octopus size one on a 8lb leader. Now I know you don’t have a leader stronger than your line but I did anyhow. Well within 5 or 10 minutes I got hit by a run away train. Now this was a lot of fun on light tackle. Had to be careful not to break my line. Had to set my drag and control lever to max. Unfortunately right in front of me about 10-12’ out was a lot of submerged brush and sticks. Worked like heck to steer him around the junk. Then oops he broke off. The leader broke instead of my line. Didn’t mind losing the fish for I C&R but would have loved to land it and get a measurement. He was better than 20”. It would also have been a first for me catching a steelhead in SOCAL and on light tackle. Caught them before when I lived in WA but never on light tackle. Now about the rabbit - I have a enclosed yard that some how became home to a family of Jacks. My dog has killed a few and several have drowned in my pool. Well this morning there in my trap sat a Jack. I let him loose in the street. Don’t think that he will be coming back. So end of story the steelhead won and the rabbit lost his home.[/size][/#004000]
