Hey Guys, I just got back from the Paunsagunt. Tried Tropic Res.and the East Fork on Monday. It is completely open and the river is running clear down below the dam. Got there later in the day so the fishing wasn't the hottest. Did manage to hook up with one nice brookie in the res. but lost him at the shore. Did get to see him. He was a good fish. We also caught a few small brookies in the river below the dam. We didn't try bait or flies, just small spinners and crankbaits. Weather was nice though. Had a great time down there hunting turkeys and took a 20 lb+ tom with a 10" beard on Sunday. I had forgotten how pretty the plateau is. Had a nice 4-wheeler ride along east fork creek later Monday afternoon. Lots of water there still; some of it even in the frozen snow form. -I got my bike stuck- Been years since I was down there. Going back again soon![cool]

Nice report. Did you fish the section below Deer Creek?

We only took a few minutes and fished right below the dam. Never made it over through Johns Valley to fish the river in the Canyon. We were over that way 2 weeks ago and the river at that point looked like Hersheys Syrup. It was very high at the time too. Think I'll wait before hitting that stretch again.

Late summer should be a good time for terrestrials.

Deer Creek has been ugly so far this spring...extremely dark, thick, and muddy. Fires on the Dutton are partially to blame for the bad runnoff in Deer Creek...we haven't seen the last of the effects of those fires... Also, wait for the releases from Tropic Res to end. Once they shut the gates on the dam, the East Fork will clear up some going into Black Canyon. There should be some excellent fishing there this summer...
FYI -- watch your back in Black Canyon...mtn lion on the loose!

I was in Black canyon two days ago, it's not hersey's syrup any more, but it's still a little blown out. No sign of lion to me though, no tracks did i see. I walked most of black caynon and a bit by osiris too. but it's getting closer to fishable, of course it snowed 4 inches today down here.

Thanks resdog for the report but I take it you didn't catch any fish

Actualy i have been catching fish, both in the deer creek area and in kingston canyon. so far this year I have caught over 250 fish in the seveir. One 23 inch rainbow, a 21 inch rainbow and a 20 brown being the best of them. That day I did not fish the black canyon, it was a nice day for a hike and I didn't have my flys and lures, with me.

So far my best is 19" brown for this year. It a long drive so I don't get over there as much.
Looks like you've been doing good or just fish it a lot, probable both.

This Deer creek comes into the East fork of the Sevier river in Garfield county and flows through what's called Black canyon and past the town of Antimony and Otter Creek reservoir. Hope this helps.
Knock'em dead and put 'em back!!

You know quite a bit about the rivers down there! I'm trying to learn as much as I can, but its kind of hard living in Salt Lake. I've seen that nice little kitty cat, too. He wanted my little brother for a snack. Now I always cary my 12 gauge with me. 2 years ago when the flows were relitivly clear we caught some decent sized browns in there. Biggest probly 23". There are quite a few fish in there. You could always see them raising on flys.

Pbh oughta know a bunch about the water down there. That's where he works! That's where I grew up. I've fished that stretch of the river ,esp. from Otter Creek downstream for a lot of years. We fished it when Otter Creek still had an opening day and the river was year round. We've caught some dandy fish. I think I posted before that I caught a 27" rainbow just between the weir pond and the Otter Creek spillway when I was 17. Lots of browns and bows in the 18-24" range then too. Fishing is better upstream now.

brookieboy -- I think you have me mistaken for someone else....I do NOT work for the DWR. I am a computer specialist for a company in Cedar City...
Jensen -- I spend a lot of time fishing the Sevier (Black Canyon, Kingston Canyon, Marysvale Canyon....bridge below Yuba running under I-15...). I damn near hit the cougar in Black Canyon a couple weeks ago...big sucker!
The sevier has always had potential to grow large fish. Water, and water quality have always been factors in this. Black Canyon has gone through a really bad spell with the recent fires, but it is in pretty good shape right now, and will just get better in the next couple years. I am really excited to fish it this summer. I have witnessed a 30" brown come out of Kingston Caynon. This was just last fall. The fish was also released. Although this is an anomaly, and the average fish is more likely to be around 16". But, 20" fish can be expected to be caught quite regularly. Never be too surprised to hear of a large fish being caught out of this river...anywhere on the river. Otter Creek res has always been known to grow large fish also, so the fish that brookieboy describes are no surprise either.
Maybe we'll all run into each other in Black Canyon this summer?

No but you still work DOWN there!!!! and yes I had made a mistake, sorry. We may run in to each other in the canyon.

The black canyon area is still a little blown, i was up there today, below the weir pool is great fishing and Kingston canyon is great right now too. the water level is up about 4 inches from the last month or so and it's running a bit faster. If you have kids to take fishing I would recomend the weir pool or any where down steam to the bridge at PCR62. It's easy for kids to fish and relitivley snag free right now. Seeing as i'm fishing somwhere between marysville and bryce on any given day maybe i'll see you around. But soon i'll have my new boat adn then it's off to new water.
