I posted this on the Wy board but nobody ever goes there. Can anyone tell me anything about the fishing in newfork lake? Such as What to fish for or what to fish with. Is it worth taking my boat? I will be taking a bunch of scouts up there in August just wondering if it is worth towing my boat all the way there.

I've never been there, but I also would like to see someone reply to this. I plan to go there this summer.

I have been to newfork a few times.it has some decent mack fishing, used to be able to catch lots of brookies on the outlet end.But since your not going til august who know what the water level will be ,they had a nice boat ramp at newfork.I would call the forest service office in pinedale before you go,and see what they say.

Thanks for the reply Do you know if the macks are very big? I don't want to haul my boat for 4 to 5 hours to get average fish but I will take it if THere are lots of big fish to chase

it is a beautiful glacier cut lake very deep. I have had two diffrent scout groups ( 5 days each trip) up there in the last 5 years. we were able to catch fish from the shore and also from canoes. while we were there on the last trip we found a dead (floating belly up) mac that probably went 15 pounds. I would love to cover the lake in my boat and see what the sonar has to say. Its kind of like fishing Yellowstone lake except you can use bait. but about the same things work if you have ever fished yellowstone lake.

Hi Calbleguy- I went there in July last year with our scout troop. It is very pretty there. I guess the lake is 3 to 4 miles long and it makes a narrow channel between the 2 bodies of water. Camp Newfork is on the southwest edge of the lake. The Forest Service has a boat ramp and campground on the north side that you can drive around to on a gravel road to launch the boat. The scout camp doesn't have a boat ramp to launch at. Their waterfront is for canoes, kayaks, and sailboats on a sandy shoreline. They had a boat dock to tie their motorboats up to though so ask if they will let you use it for your boat. I fished two evenings along the bank a quarter mile to the east of the waterfront where there are lots of big rocks and boulders. I used a brass bead nymph fly tied to a 4 foot leader with a swivel and a clear bubble float half to 3/4 filled with water. I would cast it as far as I could and then slowly retrieve it back in. I caught quite a few small planter size rainbows that way, but I never heard of the lake trout being there. There were fishing boats trolling out on the lake. The camp is 4 or more miles off the asphalt highway on a gravel road. It was quite washboardy and rough when I was there so it might bounce your trailer around. We are going to Camp Loll on Lake of the Woods between Yellowstone and Teton parks again this year. At ten bucks a day for a WY fishing license I might pass on fishing there this year. Lots of Luck. Acey, sounds like we are making the same rounds for scout camps. Last year we went to new fork and had limited sucess at fishing. we canoed up to the narrow neck between the lakes but only caught 2-3 smallish rainbows. We are going to Loll this year, but I have never been up there before. I don't think that I can pass up any opportunity for fishing so i'll bite on the wy license. I just haven't figured our an easy way of getting a license since we won't be passing through wyoming to get there, Any ideas? do they have them online yet? What week are you going up? Chicken.

THanks for the replys. I knew someone had some info about the fishing there. It is very hard to find anything online about the fishing at newfork.

When I went to Camp Loll two years ago I went in through Ashton Idaho. After unloading at camp I drove 40 minutes to Flagg Ranch to buy the WY license. I fished several spots along the lake I passed on the way back to the camp without any luck. I can't remember the name of that one. I fished Lake of the Woods that night and caught them on mostly bead head nymphs with a bubble and spinning rod. I caught some on Panther Martin spinners also. I went along the lake shore several times over several days and always caught a few. I decided to take some back to camp one afternoon to eat and I caught them with powerbait where the creek comes in on the south side near where they do the Polar Bear club challenge in the waterfall. It is so beautiful there. One morning as I was fishing I was admiring all the beautiful wild flowers in bloom and I felt like I was in Heaven. Our troop will be there from July 26th to Aug. 1st. It should be warmer by then. Where are you from? I live in Tremonton. What date are you going? I am looking forward to it again. Acey
