Hi all I fished PaliSades about 10 years ago and had a blast. we fished the water below the dam and some real nice fish were caught. I would like to hget back up to Idaho but need to know when it is good there. If anyone has heard anything or ends up going let me know. I love Idaho! You guys have a great state. Ben

Welcome to the Idaho board bigben32

The South Fork of the Snake River is good when ever you can fish it. The South Fork from PaliSades Dam to the Heise cable use to be closed to fishing Nov 30th to Saturday of Memorial Day Week. Starting this year the all of the South Fork is open year round so anglers can catch and keep more rainbows (check out page 56 of the regs for details). The fishing below the dam used to be best on the opener because it hadn't been fished for 6 months. At this time of the year most fly fisherman are fishing nymphs and catching mostly whitefish. If I'm trying to catch trout during the winter/spring I will use streamers, rapalas, spinners or spoons. The river won't be as muddy this spring/early summer because of the drought so the fishing will be easier during May and June than it is other years. With the warmer weather good hatches will also become more frequent. The most popular hatch is the salmon fly hatch that takes place the end of June/first part of July. The South Fork has a lot more fishing pressure than it did 10 or 15 years ago with guides being much more common. There also aren't as many big browns in the south fork as there use to be because too many people are keeping them.

Here's a link to the fishing regulations. http://fishandgame.idaho.gov/fish/rules/ The South Fork is listed under the "[#800080]Upper Snake Region Map & Exceptions[/#800080].
