I was thinking with my current work schedule I might be forced to try some night fishing for bass and walleye. I’ve only tried it a few times before and to tell the truth, I was not very successful and it proved to be more of a PITA than it was worth. What am I missing? The most frustrating was trying to see what I was doing, especially when it came time to tie knots. I have a decent lantern but it attracts a lot of bugs and seemed to cast shadows right where I need the light, I never could tell where my line was at and snags were enough to make a preacher swear. What gear do you all use? Headlamps? Lights? Lanterns? Glow in the dark floats? How about some of you night owls give me some night fishing tips.

There are small headlamps available. Some styles clip on to the visor of your hat and others wrap around the complete hat. Some good bug spray will help keep the bugs away.
Illuminating floats can help to see where your line is penetrating the water. And weedless hook may be the only way to reduce(not eliminate) the snags. Check out our sponsor www.tackledirct.com they carry most of the stuff for the day and night anglers.

I do some fishing at night for Crappie and I use "Fas-Snaps" that I tie on in the daylight. They allow me to slide my lures on and off without tying knots, and also make the Crappie jig hang more naturally to give it more action. They are available either from Bass Pro Shops or Cabelas or both. I use my own glow jigs and they work very well. It is hard to fish at night when you can't see. I have a built in light in the boat, and I lean my Plano jig box up against it and cover it with the lid. This diffuses the light and lets me remove the jigs and measure the fish. I also bend down the barb on the hooks so they will come out easier and as an added bonus they don't hurt the deep hooked small fish as bad. Of course Crappie fishing is different from Bass fishing and we usually fish stationary, tied on to a bridge column or anchored over brush. I use a floating Crappie light, the kind that is embedded in styrofoam for flotation, but I just barely hang it over the dge of the boat, and it attracts bugs which attract the shad and minnows, and that brings in the Crappie. The bugs aren't usually that bad if there is a breeze blowing.

when catfishing i tape on a small calimune snap light also if i am in a boat i use a float light to draw in bait so the fish come to me.try a green sheild on the latern might help with bugs but it dims light i use 5 laterns as i like the extra light.also try useing yellow line helps to see it also i have used a clip on bell to detect stricks if i was busy tieing up hooks, also putting together a few setups before hand will save time when your tring to get back in the water.

I've tried the glow-in-the-dark floats but they didn't stay glowing long enough for me. So I bought some light-up floats and they work great!
If you need helpin seeing your fishing line, get yourself a portable black light. That will make your line shine like there's no tomorrow. They have some really inexpensive ones on the market. I picked one up at Gander Mountain with two blacklight tubes and regular flashlight built into it. Only cost $10.

That's one of the other fun part with fishing. After figuring out what you need, you get to go spend some of your hard earned cash and buy it.[cool]
