I will finish a beginners fly tying class at Taylorsville High School tomorrow night. Four, two hour classes once a week, (weds). These classes are part of Granite School District Community Education Program and cost $40.00. I believe the same instructor will also have an advanced class later on. He also teaches fly casting which is also a very good class.

Tying dry flies third edition by randall kaufman. It has step by step color pictures of all the popular dry flies. Thats how I learned to tie them.

[cool][#0000ff]I did a little personal research project awhile back on this subject. I have attached a Word doc with some links on it. I haven't checked them all out for awhile, so good luck.[/#0000ff]

Crossineye,
I too am just starting to learn how to tie my own flies. What type of flies are you looking to tie?
A book on Nymphs a friend showed me which i have now purchased is "nymph fly-tying techniques" by Jim Schollmeyer.
I have looked at other titles by the same guy
also a site i have been using is http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw2/archive.html
I like both these because they give a step by step instruction with complete pictures as you go which really has helped me.
Also if you know the Name of the fly pattern you want to tie to a google search for it and you should come across alot of sites showing how to tie that one as well as others.
hope this helps get you going in the right direction.

seriously when I started to tye flies, I think 6 or 7 years ago...i just bought a begginers kit with the vise basic tools, thread, body materials, and oh yeah...one helluva manual that takes me step by step through about 20 diferent flys..and streamers, and nyphs, and drys, even a few muddler patterns...it was great when I went shopping for em I just got the one that said, evrything you will need to tie flys....and I just patiently sat for a year before I got a decent result...I had to practice my butt off...I can honestly say I have caught a fish on every type of fly I have tied, the skeetoh pattern, the buggers, and minnows...the beadheads, i think hares ears all of them I tied out of my little book and caught a fish on...I have not gotten through all the types in it yet, I know cabelas has the kits, I am sure sportsmans would too..look into it...It was complete kit for like 35 bucks or something. great time...I like to do it in the slower evenings, which are more rare than when I got the thing, but still once in a while Ill grab my box of stuff and sit at the table and whip out a few buggers or skeeto patterns and tuck em into my fly box...it is fun and stress releiving to me..nice calm pace, no hurry...and it looks good enough to eat (if i was a fish) or really hungry. lol...
