Fishing: Volunteers bag their limit of trash on Provo River

Brett Prettyman

Scattered among the numerous anglers on the Provo River in Provo Canyon
last Saturday were more than 60 volunteers fishing for something other than
trout and they were not practicing catch and release.
Their efforts led to an estimated 100 bags of trash being collected and
left a few people begging the question: What is the limit on pairs of
underwear?
Cleanup co-organizer Mike McNamara reports that enough car parts were
hauled from and near the river to build one. Among the other items: half a
canoe, paddles, countless flip-flops, road signs, several pair of underwear,
and at least one condom. Trash from motorists, including the obligatory beer and soda bottles and cans, constituted the largest category of garbage
bagged by anglers and dedicated hunters. McNamara, who helped organize the event with Ryan Barnes of Western Rivers Flyfisher, said he was proud of the volunteers -- and of the fact that only a small percentage of the trash collected was left in the canyon by anglers.
