in gladwin the recent flooding has been a hassle and a blessing to us fishermen that are brave or stupid enough to go fishing .
the water is at it's highest marks in years , this means all the smart old fish are being pushed out of there saftey spots by the swift currents combined with murkey water and are seeking the food and oxigen rich water at the dams .
yep , that's where i'll be for a bit .
todays outing had me testing out a multitude of lures , panther martins , rapalas , daredevils , mepps, stick baits , jiggs , flys and of course worms .
the ultra light was the first rod to be retired for the day , the fish were just to big to be finessed in these currents . the flyrod was second to go down for a nap , the fish are still hugging the bottom refusing to surface for any dryfly presented .
the ugly stick was the hero of the day , even thou the reel was destroid by a huge tiger muskey . how big a muskey ? well let me tell you this , that reel has landed steel without a problem , a little earlier it landed a sizeable bugle mouth bass (carp ).
the first hint of the mamoth muskey was when it broadsided a 22" pike i was landing and left it's teeth marks from one side of it's jaws half way down the pikes body . thats at least a 11" jaw opening . i have the pic to prove it too ! SEE THE PIC ON THE MICHIGAN BOARD .
after that i put on a rapala and three casts later it hit with a vengence . it peeled line so fast that the spool bent off it's axis and caused the line to snap . that was the end of my fishing trip for the day .
i cought smb, lmb, rb, carp, northern pike and a sizeable pumpkinseed . only kept one pike and the pumpkinseed . see the fish as entrys in the BFT 16 SPECIES FISHING CONTEST on page 5 .
bring on the rain ! big fish and i hit the dams when the weather gets wet .
