[size 2]PIERRE, S.D. - Marching infantry, galloping cavalry, American Indian dancers, storytellers, music, family entertainment and more attract thousands of visitors each year to the Fort Sisseton Historical Festival. Festivities begin Saturday, June 5 and run through Sunday, June 6. [/size]
[size 2]Festival visitors will enjoy a variety of historic, cultural and military-related events. Each day starts out with reveille at 9 a.m. Infantry and cavalry drills are held each day at noon on the fort's parade grounds. The drills are popular for their horseback cavalry and drill demonstrations. [/size]
[size 2]A variety of events and activities are held throughout the day on both Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can attend Dakota Dan’s Medicine Show and two melodramas, entitled "Tillie the Teller" and "How the West was Dun."[/size]
[size 2]Entertainers for the weekend will include performances from the musical storyteller Black Hawk, various Cowboy Poets, the Old Time Fiddlers, American Brass Revue, Babou, a storyteller of the fur trade era, and American Indian dancer Sidney Whitesell.[/size]
[size 2]A new feature to the festival this year is the Ranch Rodeo, starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Ranch Rodeo is a competition that tests the skills of local cowboys and cowgirls used on a ranch working livestock. The four-person amateur teams, consisting of at least one female, will compete in five events - Sorting, Branding, Poles and Barrels, Doctoring and Cow Milking.
