Is it illegal to transport live gold fish ? I have a pond at home. Ive been told that the willow ponds has several large goldfish in it. Would it be illegal to catch and transport them to my pond at home ? If not does anyone know of any other location close to SL where I could catch some ?

The dwr would love for someone to catch the gold fish in willow as for transporting?????????????? it's not leagal but if you see a dwr officer there ask him and see what he says, they my say go ahead if it means getting the gold fish out of there. just make sure they know that you are taking them to your backyard pond and not another local pond.

It's illegal to transport a live Nemo from place to place per se the proclamation, so leave that stupid Nemo alone... LOL But I can reason with you guys, a freaking goldfish, that ain't in the proclamation? (Point-it is not even a game fish). So I would deduct that it is alright if you just put it in your pond in the backyard. Especially if the officials want to get rid of the pond Nemos...

Their biggest concern when they see people transporting a live fish is that it just might end up in another body of water somewhere. They have no way to guarantee that it will end up in your pond, short of following you home.

To avoid the trouble, go to PetSmart and get a handfull of the small comet goldfish. They are about $.10 / each. Although they are small right now, they will quickly grow and can get quite large depending on the size of your pond.

$.50 spent on these goldfish is a whole lot cheaper than paying a fine if a wildlife officer decides to enforce the law on those poor goldfish caught in the pond.

Hey Paul,

Even though Goldfish are not in the proclamation, they are still a fish. They are a nongame fish and actually are related to carp. Those big KOI fish or goldfish are actually close relatives of the carp. I know for a fact that there are a few of them in Utah Lake, since I've seen them in a pond down near powell slough and the new Orem golf course that's being built, and that pond drains directly into a canal that dumps into the slough, which drains directly into the lake. Unless they have decided to remain in the pond, a few dozen of them could have gotten into the lake.

Anyway that was beside the point. The point is, it's probably worse to have live nongame fish being carted around than live gamefish, since that's the whole problem with chubs in certain waters taking over, and the problem with carp in Utah Lake. It's best to just stick to obeying the law, cause I guarantee you if they catch you hauling a cooler or bucket with a live goldfish in it you'll be in trouble.

I just wanted to second what addicted said. Goldfish at the pet store are really cheap. I wouldn't risk a fine for a goldfish.

The pet store is the safest option. They will grow very fast and you can keep them through the winter in a 50 gal drum in your garage. I have a neighbor who does that and has kept his goldfish for years.

Not that this matters, but I haven't seen a goldfish down at Willow since last summer. I think they planted largemouth bass specifically to try and get rid of the goldfish, and I think it's worked well. I haven't seen one for well over a year.
