Hey my wife and i and my buddy and his wife are headed out to spend a week in california and my buddy and I are wanting to go out and do some fishing in the ocean and are wondering if anyone has some advice on taking charters or bringing out own gear or leaving it. we are also wondering if anyone has some advice on who to go through for a good price or anything. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We are going to be in both southern and northern california so if there are places that are a lot better than others let us know. We are starting the week down south in sandiego and then are heading north througout the week,

If your in S.F. try the Bass Tube. She only fishes the Bay though, but you can catch Rock and ling cod, Halibut (Calif, not Pacific), Stripers and ofcourse the occsional sand shark. Most of the sport charters have equipment you can either rent or use for the day. In the Bay a Penn 209 is the reel of choice by most, but anything that size or larger will work. If you are going farthe north that SF let me know I may be able to point you a few other charters depending on where you are going. Just up the road is Carquenze striats and the sturgons if ther are any left that is.

Last June, my son and I fished at Dana Point with Dana Wharf Sportfishing. It was a 4 hour afternoon trip but we caught about 2 dozen fish off the point in the kelp beds. Mackerel, sea bass, kelp fish, and several other species. We used spincasting tackle from them and got a one day license. My son really enjoyed the cheeseburger in their galley. number 1 recommendation is motion sickness pills, even if you don't ever get motion sick still bring them it isn't worth the chance of ruining that trip.

In san diego there are the point loma and h&m landing charters that are right next to each other that fish the kelp beds there. also look at the internet sights of charters so you know what to expect to fish for.

The San Francisco area has a lot of great fishing right now for Salmon and Striped bass.
The salmon are out in the Ocean and boats from Montery to Ft bragg are reporting good scores when they can get out. Wind has prevented that some days. The big consistant scores vary from day to day and boat to boat. But all boats are catching fish.
Inside the bay boats are targeting Stripers and Halibut. The striper boats have been doing really well the past week with early limits reported. The boats that go for halibut also catch stripers but not as many and Halibut range from 2 to 6 or so per trip. But there is nothing like a big pacific Halibut for eating.
There is a website usafishing.com that I got most of this recent info from. It has lots of boat information on it. I track this website when ever I'm in the SF area. They even get into Albacore tuna in the Aug, Sept season.

I'm going out to the Santa Cruz area in July. I'm going back after salmon again. I went in a friend's boat last year. I'm going to give the "Wild Wave" charter a try this year and at least one day with my friend in his boat.
There's lots of options. Smaller boats, wharves, party boats, even surfcasting. Good luck.

I've done several charters out of S.F. and Moss Landing. Salmon is on the ticket right now at both places. Try [url "http://www.usafishing.com"]www.usafishing.com[/url] it has the best reports. The Kahuana out of Moss Landing is a great choice. A little later in the year both places offer Albacore fishing which is a blast and well worth the dough if you get into them. Remember to dress warmer than you would think you should. It can be chilly out on a windy day. Good luck.

Did you need species for the 16 species contest??? You can definitely load up if you hit the Catalina Islands. From there you can hit the Channel Islands. There is lots of action on Albacore and Bluefin Tuna right now down by San Diego. From Dana Point to Santa Monica, there is a good explosion of Calico Bass, Sand Bass, and Barracudas. Take a look at some of the Saltwater reports as well as some of my species from the 16 species contest.
There are lots to be caught but we just have to set you up with the right boats and areas. Let me know if you need anything. I will PM my cell phone # to you just in case you need any specific information.

I went to Oceanside in Feb and went out on one of the 0pen party boats, it was fun and we caught a lot of fish. THey had their own rods so there was no need to take your own tackle except they used 8oz sinkers and that was way too much weight for the type fo fishing we were doing. Rock cod, ling cod, calico bass and other assorted fish were caught. A 6 oz weight ensure you can actually feel the fish hit with the 8 oz all you could feel was the weight. Also they charged $1 per fish for filleting. If I had it to do over again I'd pay a little more take out a charter the limited the number of people to 10 or less and went into Mexican waters for tuna south of San Diego. They had 3-4 day charters for 300-500 per person, and they were fishing all day and making sure everyone was hooking up with plenty of fish. You slept on the boat 2-3 nights. There were more private charters for a lot more money in the 600-1000 range for a week of fishing too but that is way too rich for me.....maybe one day I'd go for something like that, but I'd rather head to Alaska for some serious salmon fishing...
