We took a 3/4 day boat out on the Calibur from Davey's Locker Sportfishing in Newport Beach CA. Ken Kaneoka of Fisherman's Access tackleshop in Brea was kind enough to set everything up and help everyone out. The crew was professional and helpful.

Goal was to go after some Barracuda and Sand Bass.

We brought a bunch of Megabait lures with us of course.

We trolled a 6" Sea Boz off the back of the boat just to get a feel for how this lure runs. It had a nice and steady action, but didn't pull too hard. It ran straight and true even at 12 knots.

When we checked back, there was allready a nice Baraccuda on the line. A great way to start off the day.

There were about 30 of us on the boat with a third of the people using live sardines, a third using various swimbaits, and the rest using metal jigs.

I wanted to stick with the Megabait Metal Live Jig to see how it fared against the live baits. Started off with a 2.5oz Live Jig that matched the color of the fish in the bait tank.

Depth to the bottom was about 100ft and the fishfinders were showing fish at 40ft. I let the jig flutter down and hit the bottom. Brought the jig up 10 ft at a time while jigging and then got my first bite.

Guy next to me was using live bait and just letting it swim. He kept getting hits, but the fish weren't sticking. I continued to get more sand bass hits and a nice 6 pounder. Most of the hits came when I let the lure flutter down towards the bottom.

Then the guys using live bait started getting barracuda hits. 4 or 5 nice size Barracude were landed around the boat at the same time.

I stayed with my live jig and started casting and retrieving. The live jig can be made to swim back close to the surface with some nice action with a slow retrieve. On the second cast I got huge jolt with my rod bent and line being pulled out, then snap. I'm sure it was a barracuda that bit through my line.

I switched to a 1.5oz Megabait Metal Live Jig in the "Fiji Gold" color.

It has a wounded fish type bleeding color, or a see through heart color depending on how you look at it. You can see how the lure shines and shimmers a bit with the reflective holographic finish.

I cast it out and let it start sink towards the bottom, on the way down, another big hit. Finally landed a Barracuda but it was too small to keep. It took a small chunk out of the lure towards the bottom, but the lure was fine.

The fiji gold did just as well as the sarding colored Live Jig. Kept getting sandbass hits while letting it flutter to the bottom.

Nick brought out a Megabait Holographic Bucktail Jig which brought curious stares from the other anglers. He cast it out and bounced it off the bottom and started to outfish us all for an hour or so.

He ended up getting one of the bigger sandbass that day.

The Megabait Bucktail Jig has a holographic body with a feather and foil tail.

Everyone caught a lot of fish, everyone was happy. The live jig performed well for me even though I didn't land a barracuda I could keep that day. Once thing I noticed is that the guy using live bait next to me wasn't there that much. He was busy changing and re rigging his bait half the time. But he did end up with a nice barracuda to take home...

Hey there geoi310,

Great report, thanks for the pics too. Those megabaits are sure fish catchers when fished right. I've got 'em... thanks for the reminders they go with me next week! ha ha

I fished next to the Calibur week ago last Tuesday. We sure did good on the bass that day with plastics.

If you have time, would you mind also put your posts on the California board too. Seems some visitors check out one board but not always the other.
