HELENA, MT —The Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department's (FWPD) 71-page safe-boating manual is now available free of charge at all FWPD offices. The manual features a workbook, test and registration card.

The FWPD says the course can help families comply with a state law requiring youths 13 and 14 years old to have a motorboat operator’s certificate while piloting a motorboat without an adult on board. This includes operation of all motorboats, as well as personal watercraft, like jet skis, with a motor greater than 10 horsepower.

After completing the home study course, students return the test, workbook and registration card to the FWPD’s Helena headquarters office. A motorboat operator’s certificate will be sent back to students with a passing score. The boat operator must then carry the certificate whenever driving a motorboat or jet ski.

For more information, call the FWPD at: (406) 444-2535.
