Winners — one category for each year between eight and 15 — will be determined by adding up points for various fish. Fish must meet state fish and game regulations to qualify in tournament. IGFA representatives and volunteers will be on hand to assist young anglers and to tally points. Young anglers are encouraged to bring their own gear, although a limited number of fishing outfits will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Tournament organizers promise great prizes for all young anglers participating in the event and will treat anglers to hot dogs and drinks provided by Shelter Island Pier. Other major sponsors include Shelter Island Pier, The Log Newspaper, Port of San Diego, Okuma Fishing Tackle, West Marine, and the San Diego Sportfishing Council. Last year about 60 young anglers targeted bass, perch, mackerel and other species to see who could amass the most overall points. Prizes were awarded for high points in each age category and to the three top overall scorers. This year’s grand prize winner’s name will be placed alongside last year’s Sydney Lockhart on the Shelter Island Pier/David Wirth Perpetual Trophy kept at the pier. Registration begins at 10 o’clock. Orientation begins at 10:45. The contest begins at 11 and ends at 1:30 p.m. A raffle begins at 1:30, with prizes donated by Squidco, H&M Landing, Shelter Island Pier, 3rd Grip, Zebco, Maxima and Everingham Brothers Bait Company. The fishing derby awards ceremony begins at 2 o’clock. Although advanced registration is not required, parents are urged to call the Shelter Island Pier to express interest so that food and beverage counts can be determined. Shelter Island Pier is always open to fishing for those who might like to pre-fish the event. Fishing licenses and IGFA memberships are not required. The pier is located at 1776 Shelter Island Drive and can be reached at (619) 222-7635. A second summer Young Angler Tournament is slated Saturday, August 28 on the Chula Vista Pier, adjacent to the Chula Vista Bayfront Park. Event times and other information will be released as it becomes available. For more information, contact the San Diego Sportfishing Council at (619) 234-8793 or visit www.sportfishing.org. For information on the IGFA, visit www.IGFA.org.

Hey theangler, Thanks for the cool info. I think my son would like to try something like that out. He does have plenty of Pier Rat experience and could probable do well.

I will check into it further. Thanks again.
