Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission recently constructed cedar tree fishing reefs at three Sherman Reservoir locations to attract game fish species and improve fishing success.

Fisheries Biologist Brad Newcomb said cedar tree shelter belts have been removed or thinned at various upland locations at Sherman Reservoir as part of the Commissions “Focus on Pheasants” initiative.

Commission fisheries and wildlife crews hauled, weighted, and placed about 175 cedar trees in the lake near Trail 12 and about 120 cedar trees in two lake locations near Trail 8. Most of the cut cedar trees were from 15 to 20 feet tall and placed in water about 20 feet deep using a barge that was purchased with a grant from the Environmental Trust Fund.

Newcomb said additional reef construction is possible next year as more cedar trees are removed at the reservoir.
